Ok, so now that I have been told a million times to stop t-rex'ing my hammer release, I will finally start training to address that.
![]() ![]() ![]() This vid shows what I 'think' have have observed in the last two games. The release should be lead with the head and shoulders...that will let you bring the arms up and straight. Let me know if I have this wrong or something I need to change on that last pull and release. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sx96lFqvSw |

wow. what a helpful response.
anywho, it looks like you're getting some nice pull in there with your legs. I'm afraid I cant help you with you're question, since I don't really understand what you are saying. Maybe someone else will get what you're talking about though. Next time, try taking some video of you hammer throwing with the camera in front of you as well. There is a constant push and pull with the hammer, and I just cant tell if you're doing that or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=pt7c8GHRqsE&feature=related If you'll notice, when the hammer head is on the left, ryans body is countering to the right; when the hammer head is on the right, his body counters left. The same goes for forward and backward. you'll notice that he sits back when the hammer is in front, and that he throws his knees down and forward when the hammer is behind him. This allows one to accelerate the hammer and maintain their balance. Then when it is time for release, you still have enough control to pull on that hammer and push with those legs. Reading back, Im not really sure why I wrote all this...food for thought i guess.

It's impressive to see an athlete throw the hammer that knows what they're doing and has the balance and the timing down. I don't have video of my one and only games performance on the hammer, but I heard my throw was one of the ugliest first-timer attempts a bunch of them had seen.

Thanks for the feedback...I reported that spam post...there are no GAMERS here...sheesh. Like you'd find a geek or a nerd in this manly group.
![]() As for watching where my hips are going...yep working on that. I have gone back to practicing without boots for a little bit to work on form. Then I'll probably try that one boot trick. With the new release I can hurl my practice/warmup hammer over 120...so I know what kind of speed is needed for that distance...now I just have to do it with 8 more lbs. |

Your form looks pretty good, now get out there and throw the thing a lot. It's really hard to get full extension if you don't have some major strength in your core, which you only get from reps. I spent all winter doing winds with a 28 lb hammer to build up my midsection, and I'm still sore and achey from throwing on Saturday.
