Okay, so I've always practiced the stones by using a shot, purely out of not wanting to get too used to one stone.  I didn't throw shot previously prior to doing the games, but I do have a track background in the hammer, so I'm used to throwing itself.

Ever since I've started throwing the shot for practice I've almost always, and I mean on a throw-to-throw basis here, had issues with losing the shot.  I lose it a lot out of my neck during the open and also have problems with the shot falling off my hand during the finish, and that's during both the open and the stand/Braemar.  At first I just contributed it to being new to the event and figured it would go away over time.  But, it never has, it's just remained the same.

But, here's the weird part: it doesn't happen at games.  When I'm throwing the stones I can feel the difference.  I have an easier time gripping it, the stone stays in my neck and doesn't move around at all, and I have SUCH an easier time driving & pushing completely through the finish.  This may explain why my stone PR's are so much further than my shot PR's, even with a 16lb shot vs. the Braemar.  It's night and day difference and I'm tired of battling with it.

I'm at a loss at this one and am almost to the point where I think it's my hand on the shot itself (I've got pretty damn tiny hands, big whoop, wanna fight 'bout it?).  But, with my track background I also believe that such thoughts are just me being a bi#!$ and not figuring this out, so I have a hard time accepting that as the culprit.  That being said, with me having such a hard time gripping/securing/pushing through the shot vs. the stone I'm starting to gradually believe it might actually BE my hand.  But, before I go blaming my child-like hands I figured I'd consult the source of knowledge and wisdom of the universe that is the internet.

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and what the result was.  Did you just go out and buy stones or did you figure something out to keep using the shot?

Thanks, throw far and drop bombs!

Probably how you are gripping the shot.  For me it's much harder on the wrists than the stones as it is a much tighter package and sits more on the fingers.

We throw stones so that's what you should throw in practice.  Take a scale and get to a stream, ocean, quarry, landscape place etc and pick some out.  If you have to go the pay route, tell them what it's for and they might just give you the stones.  Get a 16 lb and a 22-23 lb and use them.
