Well I reached a point I was wondering about when I started on this adventure of highland games.  To try to stay as competitive as I could, against some amazing guys, I have put on A LOT OF WEIGHT since my once svelt 215lbs.  Weighed in, clothed, at over 248 pounds this week and it hit me....

...DAMN I have a gut!  That is gross and way too close to my genetic potential as shown by my dad and grandfather's permanent beer guts.  We Lewis' seem to only get fat right in our abdomen and on my grandfather of 60something it was very odd to see stick legs, a basketball, a concave chest, and a chicken neck.

....Crap, no wonder my sleep apnea has come back with a vengance over the last 9-6 months and has actually been bothering me for almost 2 years now.  When I crossed over 240 was when sleep became intermittent again, but not bad.  At almost 250 I barely sleep at all and my snoring has come back.  They have adjusted my machine, but I think it is my genetic gut that resting on my lungs and compressing everything that is the real cause

...NO WONDER I can no longer tie my shoes or put on socks comfortably.  GAH. Was having work done on my foot, didn't really have a gym to go to, and winter caused my weight to shift a lot because I didn't pay attention to my eating and beers to adjust, so the last ~8lbs is probably all fat on top of what was already a 20% BF.

So, the training, exercise, and activity are going to be increased.  Beer definitely has to be cut back, no longer a free ride because of high matabolism and high workout intensities.  And I am going to cut weight.  I'd like to get back to that 225 where I was strong and lean enough to sleep.

Now I am wondering what this will do to my throws.  Guess I'll find out over the next year.

It's really simple to do, just do it.  Keep a log and keep yourself accountable and motivated.

I committed myself to dropping some bodyfat too, and I'm checking and weighing in monthly.

Good luck.

You can't exercise enough to burn off a bad diet. Clean it up, lots of protein, all the decent veggies you can eat, drop the bread and starch and it'll burn fast.

Just need to reverse the trend.   Bit more activity, a bit cleaner diet you'll be where you want I be in no time. Keep the squats and dead lifts regular, and the strength losses should be minimal.

Oh yeah, definitely reversing this trend. I can tell you that the problem is my craft beer fanatisim coupled with my extreme drop off in working out.  So too many calories at a time when I had cut back on lifting for a variety of reasons.

So the beer is definitely get cut back (might even looking to brewing some low gravity beers instead of the whopper seasonals I have been at 9-10% alcohol) and that shouldn't be an issue.

Work outs have been on the up since getting into the Arnold, so I am doing throwing practice, but lifting still iffy since my squat cage is outside.  I wasn't about to fight the polar vortex to lift and find myself frozen to a bar.  :D

I did take a very gross and pot bellied selfie that I will have to keep as motivation.  Imagine a pale puffer fish, only not as cool.

It sounds like a legit health issue. Make a food log for a week of everything you eat/drink and bring it to a registered dietician or nutritionist. After about an hour fact find and a few tests. You should get on the right track.

Also try a tabataish workout with explosive leg torso and shoulder movements with weights from 5#-45# for 5-8 mins to raise your core temp and go lift or throw.

Eat for body composition.

Train for strength.

That's it.

Your throws should suffer minimally; your body will move differently so that may take adjustment.

HAHAHA!!!  Sweet.  As a homebrewer that video means a lot to me.  Even taking a university course on beer chemistry this semester.  :D  It's the moderation part that I need to work on for a while.

I was drinking 1,000+ calories a day in beer. In the last week I have dropped 5lbs just by cutting out the brew. I think I have also saved $50 which I used to buy a hammer at Old Celt (about half the cost including shipping). Now Im not giving up beer forever. I'd like to lose 20lbs and then recalibrate and drink 2-3 beers a night instead of 10.

Ah, the old 'bump the 6 month old post' action.

Uhhhhh...yea.... I'm not sure that anyone could argue that drinking 10 beers a night would be a horrible way to try and be an athlete.    Confused
