Old Plaid-

Did ya hear that Ron Summers of Jacksonville, IL (age 51) hit a 16.56m at the 2004 USA National Masters Championships at Decatur, IL in August? There were 67 throwers in the competition and only 2 went over 16m. Ron's throw was just short of the USATF record of 16.95m for the 50-54 age group.

That's over 54ft with a 6K shot and it was 7 feet better than the next best thrower!

Ron has come over and thrown with us a few times in the past but he never really got hooked on the HGs. I don't think he ever got the hang of the caber and that kept him out. I'd like to watch him throw again.

Maybe you can invite him to your Tenn HGs, ... or to the St Louis HGs?

My best would have placed 7th in the 45-49 group.

Good luck in your training,

-AncientStanes

Ron is my hero in things shot-related.

Didn't he make a bodaciously long throw with your big Braemar stone a few years back and doesn't that field record still stand?

AO--I remember ron from first games at Springfield (DeWelt, Scruggs, Hammerheads, et al); he killed us in the stones, but was not at the same level on everthing else.

glad to see he is still doing well, but am reminded how exacting these highland events can be: no specialization allowed, have to be pretty good at all the disciplines or you finish well down the list.

wonder if ron can press his own bodyweight too?

Old Plaid-

Aye, that was back when we still threw the 18lbOS and 30lbBS.

"... his own bodyweight..."  As I recall, he was fairly slim so it would not be too much weight; he also had soft hands for a guy that could throw a 40+ft 18lb stone.

And, ... I recently had the opportunity to chat with Buddy Hull of Gold's Gym and told him of your "SweetCorn Challenge - no straps, no naps, no butter, power clean/push press for reps" at next year's event.

I told him that I've got enough bumper plates at home to cover my weight, but since you were coming too, ... we may need to borrow a truckload of plates from the gym.

He said no problems, but you may need to call him to make sure he brings enough plates.

Good luck in your training,

-SlightResistance
