So...I hurt my wrist Saturday--strained an extensor or a flexor.
Trying hard to lift some, but it's hard to do much while you're trying
to rest one hand.

Last night I was looking for something do do and hit on the idea of
Zerchers. I went and read the article from the archives here, and
followed the links and stuff.

Why in the world is that lift so hard?
I squat mid threes and dead mid 4's...but sets of 5 with 185 made
me feel literally like I was going to pass out.

Technique question: how far apart should the arms really be?
The pictures make it look like they're at your sides, but mine wanted
to be tucked into my body.

You need to pick the brain of C. Smith on the Zerk.  He loves them and does them like a mad man.

I say bring the bar on up on the delt and front.  Now that is squatting.

Them Zerchers will get ya good...I use them a lot..they work but they kill ya...They are also very good for those of us who enjoy lifting large stones...Are there any other sufferers of "anthropomorphism" out there or any that are willing to admit it..?!?!?

They work something that's for sure.  I like them a lot better than the front squats because I seem to have trouble keeping the bar off my collar bones.

I always make sure I use the bathroom before doing Zerchers.

Zerchers are awesome. They hit you very differently than either fronts or backs. In my experience, I can Zercher something between my best front squat and my best back squat but closer to the front squat (I hit a PR triple with 405 in the Zercher this past off-season). Craig Smith is a god in this lift.

Man, that's crazy. How do you stand the weight?

I can see it becoming a new favorite.
I started from pins somewhere between squat and deadlift. That
made it even more fun.

Zerks hit you in a very different way - makes your core/erectors hard as a rock - The Cool One got me hooked on 'em - about a once/month thing far away from tossing in a game - does a slaughter job on the body. I'm a sissy girl and use a pad on bar  Got a 455 triple deep, deep off-season this winter and freaked out the YMCA early morning blue hairs. hehehehehe......

Zerchers are my favorite lift.  I do them religiously, I am the Mayor of Zercherville, once a week in the offseason..........heavy.

For me, nothing hits the core like these.  Something about having to actually squat something heavy after you've had to take it and stand there to get used to the weight driving the air out of you.

As for technique, i like the bar to sit right on top of the ape gut, trying to keep the elbows in and high.  Also, setting the pins and pausing at the bottom is marvelous.

And yea, I've given the stink eye to 600+, but only 585 has cooperated.  Ahhhh.....when does the offseason start?  I think i need to get strong again.

I recommend every make them a part of their lifting game, at least in the offseason.  But then again, i'm not the conventional highland games person in the weight room....

Craig that kind of weight on Zerchers is nuts.  I know quite a few stong guys but not many that could do that.

For the love of Christ man, how does the crook of your elbow sustain
that much weight?

I was feeling very proud of myself for even attempting the damn
things.
But 585? That's four hundred pounds more than I was doing. And I
thought the damn things were going to kill me.

Mr Mayor!

I go through a lot of broken blood vessels, i can assure you.  I use those cheap white soccer knee pads, turn em around on my elbows and go at it.  But, like i said, i still end up with broken blood vessels....

Small price to pay

I can't say what will make you throw further.  I think that is my line.  But it is harder up there.
