King of all neoprene- you mentioned a while back that you utilized a "week before the game speed work while resting program". Believe you said it came from Coach Mac ....feel like sharing while you rehab ?

o mighty baabylonian, spinner to the gods: coach mac gave me a program to induce greater speed out of ancient muscles. it was a lifting program, using very light weights, low reps, which he (and i soon became a disciple) believed would jolt the nerve force and ready it for maximum acceleration on game day. using exercises to employ major muscle groups (squat jumps, 3-position power cleans, and split foot position push presses), a discipline is created to increase speed against modest resistance. for example, if throwing on saturday, the previous sunday might be at 50% of a single rep max; tuesday at 55% and thursday at 60%, for three to six sets of no more than four reps... these are all performed with great quickness and power, wham wham wham wham!!! there must be no hesitation, such as pressout on the push presses, instead these must go to arms length all at once. actually exhilarating training, but must be alternated with strength training to optimize an athlete's overall preparation. to be truthful, this is my adaptation of coach mac's theories...perhaps he can expound further, from the source. i would ask, how good do you want to get, for crying out loud? but i already know the answer. because it is my answer as well. good luck. |

All hail the sage.....I got similar advice from Jeff "Mad Dog" Madden at UT....he said the last week was all about keeping nerves ready to fire fast while resting.... I do fast feet running in place,DOT drills,bodyweight run throughs of technique, just a few all-out plyo explosions,caber cleans,etc...not very much.....never done it with weights - are the weights an effort to keep you off your feet or keep strain off a bad leg ?..........do you throw at all ? I like a little hammer ,sheaf , coupla 28 throws...say Wednesday for a Saturday game.....head bowed in reverence at the wisdom we shall receive.........hotbalmwithneoprene,lotsofmotrinoooommmmm... ..

no throwing to speak of (see previous post on other thread re maxvest and running the sand dune)-- just for fun, no shoes, no tacky hit a 90plus light hammer a couple weeks ago (accompanied by some serious rice krispies noise in the shoulder) the shoulder looks like a cadaver after davinci got through investigating and has no real power at all cornfed abs are actually rising to the fore, since i have nothing else much to train on bdwt is 232, up a little since vacation, and energy level is up as well my buddy mark bevins says milo this month has a photo post surgery but i haven't seen it since my subscription ran out no overhead lifting to speak of and very very very light benches and pulldowns to keep the shoulder in its proscribed (restructured) place good luck with the speed work; when i followed that regimen, i usually hit game day with plenty in the tank, ready to fire on all six you boys are making me proud to say i knew you when... |

sorry--didn't answer the questions you posed very well. yes i always threw the light weights (28wfd and 28wob) and the light hammer for warmups and one-two serious attempts on the day between the weight speed workouts (say on tuesday); and would step through the spins, the stone glide and imaginary hammer many times during the last week before a game; i would visualize throwing a world record.. and sometimes actually get one on the odd saturday. the body can achieve what the mind can first conceive..but only if you help it some with proper preparation. go get em big fella. |

I went to the Y and did some footwork and spins, run up the steps just to get my modulation working for the weekend. I was reading the post and ended up in my truck and had to do something. Glad to hear the scar tissue is healing up so well. Will miss you in Huntsville this weekend Old Plaid. I remember the day.

yes, applies to the jumping squats also i used to go all the way down, hit bottom, and then drive the squats up, coming off the floor 2-3 inches or more at the top, depending on the weight.. the rebound rattled my bones some, but i got used to it.. that leg explosion and the ability to do it at will is a large part of driving energy into the throw..

hey guys a few question about the second post in this thread 1. are the squat jumps done with a weighted bar? 2. what are 3 position power cleans? 3. how is this training alternated with strength training in the on-season?

Lyle - #1 . Yes , or a rock held to chest or dbells in your hands- whatever . Ease into these- start very light - like 25lb plate and work up - remember this exercise is for speed/explosion - NOT power. #2 - sorry - don't do them #3 Every other workout - Power ,rest,buffet,...... speed ,rest,buffet........ throw,rest,buffet - repeat 'till coupla weeks out from game and just toss,buffet(groove techniques) till 3 days out from game and rest 'till gameday.Buffet after.

OK I understand all but the "buffet, groove technique" I'm assuming you don't mean "eating". do you mean empty hand drills and such?

Buffet is exactly that - eat alot to recover and grow muscle -how frequent you train depends on age,condition,etc- gotta feed the fires..I stole it from another post we all thought was hilarious.........Groove technique means to throw the weights enough at game tempo that you can enter the box, set up and go like hell with no thinking. If you are thinking as you set up , it ain't going nowhere....Make sense?
