Here's a video of Andy's deadlifts.  It's 934(I think), 957 and a 1003 attempt.  Amazing.  Makes me want to work up some stinkeye and go deadlift right now.

Here's to you Myles.

Man that is amazing...  I did hangs and snatches last night...  I Never want to see that again Tim that is not fair at all....  I am still trying to get good enough at snatches so I dont have to push up to lock out every rep..

That guy is lucky he is not in the 190's or I would give him a real run for his money...  HAHAHA

Hey Ryan, I just try to keep telling myself that "relative" strength is cool too.  I mean deadlifting over 2 and a half times your body weight has to count for something.  Forget the fact that Andy Bolton has done over 3 times his body weight.

Much better for a Highland Athlete.  Deadlifts are slow...Highland Games are fast. the heaviest thing we 'lift' is 56lbs. (well cabers are heavier but you don't really throw all the weight...center point etc)

Matt Sandford didn't lift anything more than 405lbs. He built up to a 405 'speed' Squat. and a 405 snatch grip highpull. (from a routine he sent me 2 years ago).

Ya...that was my point...sure  Brain, you know I dig Dimas as much as anyone but we can't forget the fact that a man almost pulled 1000lbs. up off the ground.  That's not impressive or anything.  Besides we shouldn't ever deadlift.  We throw things.  How could bringing up your absolute strength ever help you in a quick event?  Man, I was way off.  Oh yeah, Silverback, your training sucks.  Call Brian, he'll get you a better program.

I'm sorry Brian, I should have said this earlier.  I responded to this post before I saw your other one.  I guess my applauding you in your other post was an attempt to take my foot out of my mouth.

My bad.  I'm sorry.

LOL NP.  Look I feel there are too many smart lifters with great ideas here to not try and pool the info. One thing might not work for some people etc. By getting all the info we can and learning how to use it is the only way ALL of us get better.

people froget that Paul Anderson was also one of the greatest Olympic lifters as well. and this was before power suits and high flex bars! he was the king!!!

Bench:
627 pounds

Squat: 1206 pounds

Deadlift: 820 pounds, he pulled a massive 1000 pounds using metal hooks attached to his wrists. This assisted deadlift was witnessed by Tommy Kono

Clean and Jerk: 480 pounds, unofficial

Push Press: 600 pounds, witnessed by Bob Hise

One Arm Press: 380 pounds, 300 pounds for ten reps; this 380 pound lift was the greatest lift ever lifted overhead with one arm; both were witnessed by Paul Magistratte

Backlift: 6270 pounds, witnessed by Kara Whitfield and Maurice Payne, included in the Guinness Book of World Records

Other Lifts Witnessed

Squat: 900 pounds for 10 reps, John Grimek was a witness to this

800 x 10 (2 sets), Pat Casey was a witness to this

900 x 1 (3 second pause) {done easily in 1956} [witnessed by Iron Man
author, but I do not have his name]

Olympic Press: 425 x 3 (just missed 3rd rep) {exhibition at 1958 dual meet with Russia, this is back when an Olympic press was strict} [Peary Radar was a witness to this]

400 x 7 {1957}

Paul Anderson lifted before there was any question about steroids.  My grandfather's brother lifted in the meet that Paul clean and pressed the first official 400 lb lift at the High Point YMCA in High Point, NC and he said the lift looked easy.  He later then took me to see Paul in a demonstration.  He pressed 10 reps with a dumbell that was well over 200 lbs with one hand.  That was permanately etched in my memory.

How high would Andy Bolton go with the wob?   Is it me or does he look like the Dad from the TV show "Still Standing"?

I would say he would go about 14' in WOB like Brian Said even though pure strngth is key to any lifting type activity it does not translate directly to throwing over your head..  In my opinion I would rather see what a great oly lifter can do..Oh that is right I have seen it and it is way higher than mine..  But no doubt that lift is huge...

Skull do you do alot of deads or do you do pulls and things also.?.  I have really been trying to do as many pulls and cleans and such and it seems to help if I can not wear myself out doing them before a games..

Yikes that would be amazing..  The way he pops that weight up from just below his hips to his chin...That is a shrug for sure..

I do have a question what are those  things that look like little tubes in his arms and legs, as if he has no body fat????  I have never seen them on me and wonder if that is what makes him so strong..????

Tim, I am old and not that hip, you give me the thumbs up and say this is for me, and then say my training sucks.  You will have to be clearer with me.  Are you insulting me?  Or is that something hip I need to know about?  You don't know me or my training, only a small amount about deadlifting.  I can also do 20 pullups at a body weight of 280+.  I love heavy iron, but I am not a power slob.  Can any of these video cats do one?  I really like to do pull ups also.  Just another window for you to peek in.

Myles, it was a running misunderstanding between tim and I. I don't believe he was bashing you at all.

No, Myles I was being sarcastic. Sorry.  I was giving Brian sh!t for what he said about deadlifts.  I'm actually in your school of thought when it comes to deads.

I hate when that happens.  It just doesn't come across on the computer the way it does in my head.

I thought you were going to teach me something young and hip.  Like when you say someone is bad, they are good.  I thought if I sucked, it might be good or cool.  But I love sarcasim.

Me too. So long as everyone knows you are doing it.  Otherwise confusion can happen.

Deadlifts are cool.

To try to answer Ryans question above about deadlifts vs power cleans, I  usually like to do what I call The Cycle.  As the weight goes up on the bar I start with power snatches then to power cleans and then to snatch high pulls and then to clean high pulls and then to deadlifts.  In season, such as now, I really stick to deadlifts only with the cabers, weights and hammers acting as my quick moves.  I think of throwing the implements as explosive weight training as well, and the deadlifts are my grip/trap/lats/erectors/glute/ham/keep me a little mean and ready/ lift.

Over what period of time/workouts/weeks do you do a cycle?

How many times per week (off-season and on)?

What kind of set/rep scheme do you use?  Do you vary it over a cycle?

Ink wiring minds want to know.

The off season deadlift cycle is pretty standard and they rotate in 3 week cycles after a 4 to 6 week preparatory phase, the main thing is to dedicate yourself to lifting more and more weight.  You have to tighten the bolts on the engine before you run it hard, which is why the preparatory phase is important, ie., sets of 5 to 10 and significant more workload.  In season, I will usually do one workout weekly of deadlifts and rapid box squats with emphasis on speed of movement and so 3 x 3 on the deadlift.  You have to be honest with yourself as to how recovered you feel and how fast you are moving the bar to adjust the weight you use, but it is really about the same weight. I want to spend most of my time thinking about throwing and not selecting poundages.  I will however deadlift a little heavier in the mid-summer, particularly if I have a late season games to peak for (ie, Master's in September).  Usually never over 80% to 85% of my 3 rep best from the off season program) but a little more weight that will carry over as a benefit towards the end of the season.  This is my particular adaptation to being a Master thrower.  When I do this, the weights and cabers feel a little lighter which also offers a psychological edge as well.
