    Posted: 8/11/10 at 4:18am
So I wanted to start a log to remind me how much more I need to workout.

Sheaf: 15ish throws
WOB: 10ish throws  4 Good pulls at 15'

Lifting:  first time in 2 months

Bench
275x2xPain 225x3
225x5x4

Barbell Russian Twists
135x8ea. way x3

Skull Crushers
90x8x3

I've had arm "injury" since Jan when I tried out for an indoor football team.  It only really bothers me when I doing any pressing (push press is the worse) and stone. I was hoping 2months away from it would have helped. @ 225, the pain was bearable, and I wanted to finish the workout.

Threw at the Minn. this weekend for the "World" Am Championships. Got my butt kicked.
Braemar - 41+ - 1st
Open - 48+ - 4th
HWD - 33+ - towards the bottom of 11 athletes
LWD - 70+ - 9th
Caber - 70 degrees - we only made it through 1 round, broke 2 cabers
HH - 87+ - towards the bottom
WOB - 14 - 6th.
Finished 8th overall

After finishing 4th in the open stone, which I rely on heavily in big events to keep me at the top, I knew it was going to be a long day. This is the first time i've seen an AM event with 9 guys over 70 in LWFD.  I've put a lot of work in the wfd this summer, and nothing to show for it.  I'm excited for WOB for the first time, even though I didn't clear 15, all 3 pulls "had the height" so what i've been working on has helped, just have to work on the aim I guess.

Canoe trip. Lots of beer, lots of good food, lots of laugh(ab workout?). Canoed 8+ miles on sat. Decent core workout trying to keep 300+ pounds from tipping a canoe when paddling like a mad man.

9/5/10 East Coast Chamionships

OS: 52' F F           ;    1st
HWD: 34' Pass Pass   5th
LWD: F 62 68           4th
HH: 81 87 95'2         1st PR
LH: 108 119 113?     1st PR
Caber: 60 50 60       10thish?       19' 140 no taper
Sheaf:  33               2nd
WOB:  13               3rd(tied with 4 or 5 guys

Overall: 2nd. 2.5 points back

Its obvious which event cost me the ECC title(again). I had my best 3 picks of the year, so I guess I can be happy about that. 15 degrees more would have probably got me enough points to win. I fouled a 53' and 55' stone throw. HWD was a 34' upper cut throw, so I know why my back didn't like it.  Luckily Kate Mason and Sam Grammar were there to help. They patched me up and I survived the LWFD. When the Hammers rolled around, the back started to loosen up. Things started to click in the hammers, so i can't wait to throw them again. Since the last time I competed in the sheaf(June 21st) I have changed everything. I switched it up to throw more like HB3. My back didn't like that at all, so I had to switch back to my old technique. I cleared 33' for like the 10th time(with like 8 different forks) and had some awesome pulls at 35'.  I just sucked in WOB. Back wasn't an issue. Was tied with Mike Dickens going into the event(i had more 1st places). He was clutch and i wasn't, thats about it.

9/11/10  Midwest Championships

Stone: 46'
HWFD: 34'
LWFD: 70'
HH:     89'
Caber  2:30  nasty stick for an AM
Sheaf 20lbs:  28'
WOB:  14

I competed in the "Pro/Am" with KO, CSmith, and Isaac Burchett. If you follow Craig's log, you know that him and KO where having a great time. It was hard for Isaac and I to stop laughing enough to throw far.  We did pretty well for not being focused 99% of the time. It shows you the difference between 2 good pro's,. and 2 top 10 ams: They weren't being serious much at all, and Craig still beat us in the overall with passing in the hammer.  I wouldn't trade the experience for anything though. Probably the most fun I've had throwing ever.

9/12-9/19  VACATION went on a house boat trip. Unless swimming, fishing, and drinking.... a lot .... count as working out, then I didn't anything.

9/21   Weight: 332lbs

My brothers and I are in a weight loss comp for $100. Weigh in is Dec 15th.  I don't plan on winning, since they have no reason to keep their strength levels up while losing weight, but it will get me the motivation to get me going toward my goal weight of 280lbs.

10/2  Scarecrow Highlander   (windy, cold, and drizzle all day)

Braemar(22lbs)  39'+

Farmers walk (500lbs 100')  39 seconds

Caber: 11:50, 11:55

Keg loader (5 kegs 175-250) low 30 seconds

WOB: 13

DL for reps (450lbs)  12 reps

Overall: 1st by default.

Extra: Open stone: 44'   LWFD: 64

I figured I'd give this a try. Never concidered myself much of a "strongman" The farmers walk proved once again I have grip like a 10 year old girl.  I had to sit it down once, and also kept me from trying to move faster.  Keg loader was a learn on the fly since I've never done it before. DL reps I dreaded all day due to my back issues I've been having. I did 12 in about 25 seconds, so i figued I'd take a breather since i had 1min. should have known better.  The extra events I did for fun, and wasn't really into it.

10/3

Went to the Pro Clinic in Ashland OH.  Valenti and Andrian were the "talent"  Learned a bunch of things in the weights I needed to figure out and few things in the hammers I will try.  Got some ideas from Adrain in the glide to help me with my coaching high schoolers since I've pretty much forgot everything about it. Overall it was a good learnign experiance.

Indy Scottish Games  Comp throws/(extras)

Braemar: 39 (41)

HWFD:  33 (35)

LWFD:  68

HH:  93

Caber:  11:00 in the qualifier/ 80 in the comp

Sheaf: 30'

WOB: 14

Farmers walk: 160lbs+ stones, 235'

It wasn't too bad of a day for me. HWFD felt good, and I thought I was gonna go big, but didn't happen. LWFD felt like total crap. Hammers i coming around. Sheaf we jumped up to the 33'6". My final throw was HUGE, but off to the side. WOB felt good, I am getting to the point where I am throwing high enough for 15, just not over the bar. The stones for the farmers walk are big stones with a rind handle on a swivle. So when they hit your leg, they start spinning.  Makes it interesting.

10/12

LH 10 throws.  Worked on using the blades properly.

WOB 10 Throws at 15'. None Cleared. booooo

Read up on Jim Wendler 5/3/1 program. So I figured I'd try that. I'm doing the "boring but big" workout. Which pretty much means you do the main lift, then do the main lift for 5x10 at 50-60%, then an aux if wanted.

Push Press

135x5, 155x5, 175x6,  115x10x3, 105x10x2

Lat Pull downs

165x10, 180x10

Yes, this is my first time in the weight room in exactly 2 months

I didn't do my "heavy" set due to not having a belt. My back is feeling better, and I don't need go back down that road again.  I should be ordering a belt here soon.

Bench

135x5, 155x5, 185x5, 225x5, 250x6

145x10x3, 135x10x2

Seated Rows

120x10, 150x10, 165x10x2

My bench went down farther then I thought. Plus its really hard for me to get pumped lifting by myself for bench press.

It's there. I get nervous about DL heaving without a belt.  I ordered one, but its going to take 6-8 weeks. I found out I can go heavier if I strap up, since my focus shifts from my grip(which sucks) to my form, and doesn't hurt my back.

I did DL grip on the first 2 sets(switched after the 1st) and overhand on the 3rd. Tells how much my grip sucks, i could hold on to 315 for shrugs.  The last set was a competition.

You're getting there Thrillingham...just takes time Hoss.  You know this.  I am on squat patrol here in an hour...I get to relearn squats.  With 135.

Shame.

Silly question Big J, but when you grip the bar, are you REALLY squeezing it, or just hanging on?

A little of both, ha.  When I focus on my grip, I really squeeze, but then my form(DL is the worse) suffers. But My grip really does suck, I can hang clean 225 maybe twice.
