Sounds stupid, but when i was throwing the heavy hammer today, the end of the handle hit first probably 3/4 of the time. Am i doing something wrong with my rotations or release? The hammer is an Old Celt with rattan handle, so its not some strange homemade implement.

after reading this again, i know it sounds really stupid, but the end of the handle hits the ground just slightly before the ball hits. i'm assuming i'm throwing too much of a line drive or something like that. |

A good hammer throw lands ball first, with the handle
trailing and well off the ground. I'm frankly not sure why. |

If it's a really good throw, it won't land.

I know how it is supposed to land, but am wondering why mine isn't
landing that way. I don't think my form is that bad, so I'm really not sure why this is happening. Figured I would ask the many people with much more experience than I. |

I would have to see video to tell you for sure, but I imagine that your release
angle is probably less steep than your wind angle, so you are pulling down on the shaft at release. Most likely, yes, you are not throwing it high enough for gravity to exert itself and pull the head to the ground. |

It could also have something to do with an insufficient
follow-through at the release. |

Sounds like the low point is to far to the left (right handed) bring the low point to the middle and drive your hips up .

Josh, just throwing this idea out there, it might not be you. Ever think that hammer is not right?

It's not uncommon when you start out and the hammer isn't going very far (I see it happen in novice classes pretty regularly). It's also not something I'd worry or even think about unless you were chucking the hammer 100' and it was still happening. Worry about building your distance. I've never seen a hammer that flew 100' land any other way but head first. |

it could be how you release. I heard someone once describe it as the Y. form a Y with your arms when you release.
