Has anyone ever fiberglassed a caber? My last practice caber broke and I'm starting to carve up a new one... It's alot of work and I'm trying to think of ways to strengthen it without adding alot of weight. It's a 5x5 pine post that I trim and round the bottom 4-5 feet into a nice handle.

I should have used google first... I found a couple threads talking about this exact thing. Now I'm not so sure I want to fiberglass it. I'm thinking about just covering it with gorilla tape.

Just go to the top of this page, click on "search" and do a search for "fiberglass." You'll find posts dealing specifically with cabers.

fiberglass is stronger than gorilla tape, I've still had them brake with the tape. Plus they get all sticky when it gets hot out. Fiberglassing is expensive and time consuming but worth it. Just make sure you put 4-5 layers of fabric on and a couple layers of epoxy between each one, plus a couple layers of epoxy on top.. |

Maybe I'm just too country but...it's a big stick. All you
got to do is go cut one down if you keep breaking 'em. Personally, I'd rather get sawdust on me than fiberglass splinters.

i guess if i lived in the southern states I could just go cut a tree. Not much selection where I live and I don't know of any areas where I could just go cut down a tree legally if I did spy a good one.
Easier to go buy a 16' 5x5 for $30. I'd just like for it to last a little longer than my last one. The one I just bought doesn't have many knots and it's treated so I'm hoping it will fare better. If it's still in one piece after Oct then I'll see about fiberglassing. |
