Hi,

My two brothers and I would like to try our hand at throwing heavy objects.  Two of us (including me) are located in San Diego.  I posted a question in another thread looking for a club or person to introduce us to the events in So Cal.  My other brother is in Monterey, CA.  Are there any clubs or individuals in the Monterey area that could let him try his hand at the events?

This is probably too ambitious on short notice, but we will be in Monterey for the games (my daughter dances) and we thought it would be cool if the three brothers competed in the athletic events (if we can try it out beforehand and if we can register for the novice categories on short notice - lots of ifs).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Chris

Chris, I'm right there with you.  Live in North County (Valley Center), and would love to train for next years Vista Highland Games.  I'm 42 and a comparative small fry @ 150lbs (probably should compete with the ladies!) but would love to explore and see what its all about.

It was at the Highland Games in Vista this past weekend where I thought it would be fun to try and that I might not completely embarrass myself (against the novices of course).  Although, it may be much more difficult than it looks which is why I want to try my hand at it first!

I think anything below about 250 is a small fry for some of those events!  I would guess a decent amount of it is technique, though.

For San Diego area lookup Ambition Athletics (cross fit gym) they have a ton of people who train and compete in the games. There are some others in the area, but I am not sure if they are active.

For Monterey, best bet is Martin and Garrett Nichols in Santa Cruz. I practice with them occasionally on Sunday afternoons at Shaffer Field in Santa Cruz (great spot). PM me and we can arrange to meet there on a Sunday afternoon (holiday weekend probably won't happen). Martin, Garrett, and some others make it out there a little more often than that.

I practice at Stanford and one other field, but that is probably too far for someone to travel from Monterey just to try things out.

Either way PM me and I will put your brother in touch with Martin.

If you end up contacting Ambition Athletics ask for Brian Crilly or Max Shank, they are two very good throwers out of that gym.

PM Rogerws76, he has a group that trains in Newcastle. There are some others, but he would be a good starting point.
