Who does them? Why? How much are you doing?

Who doesn't? Why not?

I do them.  Why?  Because Skullsplitter told me to.  How much? Well, I'm working on it.

Well, blind faith is good but the reason push presses are a great training exercise is that it is a faster movement than the bench press and utilizes more muscle tissue, mostly the core.  Also, the movement replicates the movement of a stone put more accurately.  Having said all that, this is not a bench press bashing post, as many shot putters tell you a big bench can help develop a long throw.  There are lots of guys who have great stone puts who don't bench and vice versa.  So, push press is a great exercise to work the shoulder girdle and if developed properly can help make for big throws.

17/20 is a perfect example of a non-bencher who is a great stone tosser (I am sure he was a big bencher when he had shoulder cartilage).  Oh, did I also mention there is a greater range of movement with the overhead press?

PS-IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION.

It's all about bar speed big man. I'LL assume were talking upper body bar movements as they relate to the stones. Think in terms of bar speed at this point in the season. A BOUNCE BENCH is very fast and reactive, a BENCH THROW is fast and has a long path, a SPLIT JERK is fast and dynamic, seated INCLINE MED ball toss and catch is fast and reactive, BEHIND THE NECK pp JUMP AND RELEASE (this in season is great) its reactive, its fast, and you get toe push and extension at release. PM me or give a call-don't just do them, make sure you understand the tech. the theroy. I just back from the gym ( training hall) and did the following for upper body :BOUNCE BENCH 185 15X2 30 SEC. RECOVERY, BENCH THROW AND CATCH (SMITH) 3X5 a 125,  SEATED INCLINE D/B THROWS W/ THE 40'S, X6, AND 20 LB MED BALL THROWS AND CATCH , 3X10 WHILE SEATED ON INCLINE. Now TR. I will do a MED. HEAVY INCLINE 250 TO 275.

I MAY BE BIG , BUT I'M FAST

I knew I would get you to kick in on the topic!  Just yanking your chain.  All upper caliber shot putters have great upper body explosiveness.  These would be great to apply, I will talk to you as I need work on my stone toss!  Again, I was making a pitch for the benefits of push presses with no discredit to the bench press or its variations.  Good topic.  Hopefully, more guys will weigh in.

"Blind Faith" - Let's see... an MD, with a big time background in OL, that has picked up a bunch of really big rocks, and has alot of Bill Staresque knowledge.  It ain't blind faith, it's taking advantage of available resources.

Thanks for the props you gladiator.  As a matter of fact this months Milo has a 5 page article by Bill Starr on the jerk.  Read that and you will want to start those as well.  Overhead lifting is always good. Speaking of resources, 17/20 has a ton of knowledge as evidenced by his post.

SS,I thought you'd like the avatar.  I'm now a Milo convert as well but that was dwoods fault.  17/20, I have access to a smith machine and was thinking of the bench throws.  Problem is that I have been off for a few months due to an illness and only started back in the weight room last week or so.  Worried that such a dynamic movement with 3 months of detraining would kill my shoulder.  Anything too that or should I just give it a go.  I'd like to throw the "Stone of Strength"  at Hapy's Mad River Games and thought that would be good preperation.

I used to love doing them 315 for 3-5's when heavy.

Gotta love the multi joint movements.  Big blast with the thighs, no shoulder press.  Catch with feet side to side - no split (front to back).

This thread brings me back to a later discussion:

"If you only had 3 lifts to do for the games what would they be?"

Push Press

Cleans

Front squats

I'm a believer!

Roy, I'll see your 315 for 3X5's and raise you 350 for 3X5's with speed

Don,

I have not touched any implements yet. My lifting has been tremendous. I haven't been this strong in over 10 years. However, I aggravated a hernia. It's uncomfortable but not debilitating. I haven't decided whether to get the surgery soon and try to salvage the end of this season or wait until the offseason.

Thanks for your suggestions about speed. That's exactly what I need. My strength is good but I need to add explosion. I train like a powerlifter - I need to train like a thrower. I'd like to pick your brain after the season and design a training strategy if you're willing.

MJ- sorry to hear that. This getting old stuff sucks. I'm spending less and less time grinding out the heavy/limit stuff in the Training Hall. Had a couple off heavy Pulling sessions, however, most were 60-70 percent. Most of the leg or squat sessions were done off hi boxes, did my front squats slow tempo 5sec.down,5sec.up.-no box. Still able to do some serious work with hi step-ups, and the glute ham work (good morn., stiff leg -various) That was my Fall/ Winter in the T.H.

I'll be in touch.

Wayne, believe me, I was fat and out of shape in 2005. Things will be very different in 2008.

thegnome-the bench throw is great movement, however, doing them on the Smith can be rough when you catch it. They were DESIGNED to do on a Core Max - I 've yet to see one in NewEngland. Look at some of the West Side Barbell routines relating to Speed Benching , eg , bands , chains.  I think the Stone of Strength throw will depend on your starting or limit strength and your explosive strength - so your basic Bench, Incline and PP will apply . We used to do a standing incline ( great on the lower back) called a Neidhart Press w/50% ( sorry about the spelling) with the right leg pulled back , however , we would release on the last rep. Good luck with the shoulders . I started throwing HG at 38 , the shoulders were done at 38.5 , however , a 48 they feel great, weak , but no pain. - so there is hope

17/20:

Just for future reference, the movement is called the "Nieder Press" after 1960 Olympic gold medalist Bill Nieder of the USA.

I am glad to hear there is hope for my dodgy shoulders yet.

Neider press is awesome. I have an old activator arm off of a D-8 that clocks in at about 95# that I use for the movement. Works great and it freaks out the neighbors.
Cheers,
