You're just jealous.
Ideally they should be measured that way - it's only the usable length of the weight that matters. |

Probably not what Dave was thinking of, but he laid the k-monster moniker on me, and I always called him "Natural" at a meet, because he is a natural at this stuff.

The USE of implements have greatly changed over the years 1969----2007. There are a number of VERY rebutable makers and it seems that since there are now records and closely tabulated score with INVITES on the line...WHY wouldn't you want to make things more legit ?
To be perfectly honest...if there is a stone comp with a felt tip marker signifying that the stone weighs 17-lbs. and no record is set will that particular stone ever be measured and weighed ?
Food for thought ? Maybe just a crumb ? |

Coach, who says that is legit? And stay here in our sport with the answer, and in our time. Please do not use the time machine to go back into track world. And what about Mr. Wonderful?

I'll assume you actually wanted a serious answer at some point. It is historical, the SGA rules say (and have said for many many years):
And that is how we do it. |

I would go out and buy a Tungsten weight with the thinnest handle available and you should p.r. especially on a downhill location...

I wonder how much a tungsten weight would cost? 56lbs or 28lbs of sweetness would fly high and fair. If it was possible, I would have the weight bored out and filed with mercury. Now were talking some serious fun!

But it wasn't tungsten filled with mercury, Mike Thompson used steel and filled it with Mercury. |

It's all in the chain and handle, Thompson mercury weights were never flyers because of the thick handles and chain. Take any weight and put an olympic hammer handle and wire on it and I'll bet it will fly. |

The old gill solid metal hammer handles could work but a few turns of tape would be needed. To small a diameter for a the 56 and maybe to small for the 28. The newer hammer handles would not hold up to the impact or the pull and a guy could loose a finger or 2 when it came apart. I know guys who have done that with the Olympic hammer and the scars I've seen say it's not a good time The smaller weight head would be a benefit for sure with a lighter handle. If the handle is to heavy it starts to fly like a bolero (sp?) All crazy like.
Was Mike Thompson a Track Guy? If so it figures a track guy would work out a devilish plot to get an advantage over the rest of the world.

Devlish Plan -Part 2 " it figures a track guy would work out a devilish plot to get an advantage over the rest of the world. " Just a coupld of thoughts from a Heavy Events ( 1969 ) Track guy ( 1973) Schedule a couple of caber comps (against lesser competition) on a down slope field . Peak for a games with really good round stones that have NOT been weighed recently and great conditions ( flat/hard surface) and you can see where it would be easy to manipulate the scoring tables. I realize that there is a honor code but that being said...I also remember "arramged" backyard games to jack up the rankings...LOL
KEEP your eyes on those track guys (especially hammer throwers)... |

Steve, Mike Thompson used to train with Bill Sutherland. That should tell you all you need to know about the linkage to track like thinking. |

Hmm, mercury filled weights. That'd be nice, bust one open and create a hazardous waste site. A bullet shaped tungsten weight, filled with mercury, taped chain to make it track better, and an aerodynamic collapsing handle. Yeah, there we go. |
