I know this is for Highland games advice, but I also know some of you are Coaches. Isaac and Emily were asked to throw the discus and shot for  some homeschool track meets. Any helpful suggestions? Isaac took a few throws today with the discus and threw it about 120 feet or so. Emily threw about 70 feet or so. What are considered good throws for a 13 year old girl and a 17 year old guy?  If you don't want to post here, e-mail me at darylb@ctcis.net
Yeah, those are all my kids. Same wife. Yes, there are eight.

This sounds like a job for the Polish Prince.  Mike's handle here is "meat".

Nothing wrong with 120 for your son assuming a 1.6kg discus.

For high school boys with the 1.6kg discus, these would be some rough guidelines: 120' = know how to throw, 140' = competitive, in the mix in most meets, 150-155' = in the top 2 or 3 in most conferences, qualify for sectionals.

For high school girls with the 1kg discus, the numbers vary more, as the depth of field is much smaller.  The corresponding numbers for girls would be about 80-90', 110', and 120-130'.

Based on Isaac's WFD and Stone Throw, I would expect him to be able to throw close to 140' with the 1.6kg discus, if he spent enough time to get the technique down.

Did you have Emily throw a 1kg discus?  I would expect her to throw a 1kg close to 100', based on her WFD.

Also, the best source I found for teaching the discus is Dan John's e-book (free!) on his web site at www.danjohn.org/coach.html.  Look under the "Book" section.  Also, his "Get-Up" newsletters have a lot of tips that are useful for throwers of all type, including Highland Games.  Dan John is a top masters in the Highland Games, in addition to track and field throwing.

Yes it was a 1.6 discus. He threw his first about 80 then tried a spin and it went over 100 then a couple more and it was going out about 120 or a little farther.

I think he will get better with a little practice. Thanks for the help guys!

very cool Scott. Emily and Isaac won't be there because of a Bible  Bowl tournament, but, teach Nathan and we can pass it on!
