after some deep google searching i did find a book on how
to make various throwing "things" but for the caber it's
saying a ten foot section of PVC pipe and to fill with sand
till desired weight... my thought is with the sand wouldnt
the weight be unevenly distributed thus throwing off the
basic physics of caber flight?

I like to dress like a lumber jack and drive down to the local feed & seed and pick out several 16' & 18' barn poles. Use a draw knife to taper the end and VIOLA' a caber! You can use these while the one you cut down in the forest sheds some of the water weight.

I went to Lowe's and got a 16 foot 4X4 for 19 bucks. I used a belt sander to round off the corners, stained and water sealed it. It's not perfect but it works!

I carry 15-footers in the bed of my Chevy s-10.  Yeah, sure they stick 7-8 feet out the back.  You put the heavy end INSIDE the bed and the skinny end outside. Then you lash it down like a crazy man. Then you put a red rag and other colorful things on the end. Go drive.

Call tree-trimming/arborist companies around your area and let them know you're looking for a fir/pine/spruce.

Where I work, the Big U has  these 14 foot long, tapered steel light poles.  I've always thought about trying to beg one that was getting taken out, off of the grounds guys. Then I'd have my welding dude add 2 feet of pipe to the big end and a flat plate. Then I'd use a piece of wood to make a nice round bottom end to sit in my hands. I'd have a 16 foot, 'bout 80 pound STEEL caber that would never break for the remainder of this century.

Ancient Athletics has one of these, but it's much bigger than that, and has what I believe was shotput at the bottom for a handle.  I don't believe I ever saw anyone turn it, but it's been years ago (2001-2002ish)

find a tree 20 plus feet long and straight with a nice taper top to bottom and cut it down, strip as much bark off as possible.  Cut to a length you can turn without killing yourself.  Longer is better but if you can't ever turn the caber then you won't benefit much from practicing with it.  I have put 18 footers on the roof of my minivan.
Yell loudly and carry a big stick...

home depot or lowes delivers 20 ft 2 x 6s to your house.
My cabers are three 2 x 6's screwed with 3 inch deck
screws, with plywood sandwiched at the top for more top wt and strength at the 2/3 length (where it breaks). Add some
liquid nail if you really want it stiff.

one of these lasts me 2 to 3 yrs painted. I've got one so
heavy i can barely pick it at the beginning of the season.

I love the downed light pole that Pete Kline had turned into a caber long ago. It was a great training caber.

too dry out here to go cut a tree down, it dries out and snaps your first pull..  we have to glue the cracks and fiberglass it.

I talked to Isaac Burchett and he does what Pockoski suggested, 3 2x6s screwed/liquid nailed/bolted together then taper the bottom and it's gold. I'm going to give this a shot later this year until I have the cash for the 21' pole I'm looking to get.

Junk 18 foot power pole from local power company ($7).

Used Tire with 4x4 blocks inside to distribute the weight a little (free).

Tie downs (including 25 footer for the front) ($40)

The looks and questions while driving from St. Louis to Tulsa (Priceless)

Thought I would share that pic, as it was the method recommended to me for carrying a caber with my truck for long distances.  It worked relatively well.  I would like to get some High Density Foam blocks setup for this and have one at both the front and back of the cab.  Also considering a commercial truck topper with racks built in.  Probably still need a foam block for the front of the cab.

actually, I've been considering making a caber out of some 3inch diameter PVC and cement.

For real. Go get a tree. If you have to you can even buy
one almost any size from a raw lumber yard for like $20...
There's not any real substitution for it.
My throwing buddies and I have taken one that we cut,
stripped, sanded, and tapered ourselves with an axe, a
rasp, and sandpaper. It was good enough to be used as the
challenge caber at our local games. If there's a will,
there's a way.
