I am killing myself trying to do overhead squat and this?  I am shocked how far you stride out and I guess your dropping deep enough, you off knee is hitting the ground.

Can we call that showing off?

(Not that I ever would, no never, wouldn't ever offer up such dis-respect in public like that....)

But maybe if someone else said it.....

((Yes, I am jealous and no I cannot do that...heck as Myles said, I am barely overhead squating that let alone moving around with it....gah.))

Actually, now that I look again...

Comment: Man that little guy prayin' to the machine behind you has some trust in your abilities!  (Is he actually working something with that move?)

Question: In the second part of your lunge...(or anyone elses)...what leg are you using to get back up to standing?  I find the forward part to be straight forward enough...it is like a pylo on your front leg.  But when I am going backward...not sure if I should be pushing off front or transferring weight to back leg and standing up.  Does that make sense?

Thanks guys.

dl - i push off the front.

mac - i too have seen the chicks ohs vid, very impressive.  I would venture to say there aren't many guys in the world that weigh a normal weight (230+) that could do that.

Those old pics of cleans and snatches are awesome splits.  Not anything close to what i was doing, but a cool pic none the less.  I will just ignore the not so subtle attempt to demean my lift for now, lol.

Jason - i would like to go heavier.  always.

Also, i recommend everyone try these of course!

I'll be trying these as I am just now gaining the ability to do a regular overhead squat.  I also tried to do the Larry Brock reverse your feet lunges...let's just say that Larry makes things look easier than they really are!

Coach, your showing a little chick who weighs just over nothing.  She does not even use up the bar in the grip.  Part of the problem for big men is the bar is not long enough to get your arms out wide.  That is part of what is so impressive with Craigs action, he is a big dude showing the flexability.  That same flexability is not so impressive with some earth barefoot yoga chick.  I bet I can do more pull ups than her, and I also bet she can't dead with me.

Besides, I go to the gym twice per week and the is the entire extent of my highland games training, so a little video every now and then is all i got

Good job Craig, thats impressive.

I will say though, I know Nicole, she is legit. As for pull ups, she probably could beat us all, she has done 10 muscle ups in a row (pull ups in to dips on rings.) ...I cannot do one .  She is pretty strong too, i know I have seen her do a nice total (press, squat, dead). Obviously the heavier you get, the harder that type of stuff is though. I am not taking anything away from Nicole or Craig, both great athletes. Just shows how the talented ones make things look easy.

This is just hilarious.  As someone who did 'overhead squats' for 13 years as part of o-lifting, let me say that they are about the biggest waist of time for serious throws training.

If you want a challenge try them like this:

She would RULE in the "<190 wt. class, female, Calif. region, overhead squat for reps, barefoot" group at any Highland game. We need to get more ADs to offer that class so we can recruit more athletes!

I love how everyone took a lift i made up and tried to compare it to everything else, lol.

It is what it is.  It's not an overhead squat, it's not a split snatch, split clean, push jerk, tricep kickback or anything else.

And coach, if this is a S.S.S.S. as you call them, please have one of your athletes, or preferably yourself, and take the weight that you would OHS with and try these

St. Clair - lol.

I do a similar lift, except I step back into a reverse
lunge (my knees don't like the forward version). Doing it
my way, I'm short of my OHS weight, but not by much. Doing
it Craig's way, because of the need to control the
horizontal movement of the bar, the weight is way
down from the OHS.

Kurt, it's not surprising that the OHS was a waste of time
for you. But few people who are not also Olympic lifters
have your years of experience holding heavy weights
overhead.
