No, I don't mean any snatch perfomed by yours truly, I mean one
arm snatches. I see a lot about power snatches and adding tires to the bar and stuff...but I was thinking that for most of what the Games are about, one handed lifts would be better? Am I way off base and if so, why? thanks. |

I don't know if you're way off base, but I love the 1arm snatch, I worked up to 145 for triples with each arm and added some nice traps to boot, plus I feel better in the WOB

Your not way off...at all. They would be a solid addition to most training schedules.

I do those better than a barbell snatch believe it or not.I don't know why,but it comes easier.I've cleaned and pressed 145 a couple times, but not sntatched it.Good grief!

Any advice I give should immediately be overlooked and regarded as mindless babbling… that said, I 100% agree with all points on this thread. I use a relatively low weight and concentrate on speed and form for any dynamic lift, one arm snatch being the only exception. For some odd reason I can maintain max speed even when going heavy. The lone drawback is lowering the weight from overhead when you are going heavy…

I use two hands when lowering it.My gym would frown on large holes in the floor.I can't do them at home because for one arm snatches I'd have to load 50# plates on my cheap ass bumbells to make them fit.

Dumbbells are fun and effective I just got done doing 5 weeks of dumbbells with a weekly Dino workout once a week see link below. It important to change you workout every 4 to 6 weeks. Even one arm bench press works the body total different way than barbell bench or two arm benches it forces you to use your whole body or you will flip over when you press the weight. I also did dumbbell overhead squats.........totally different than barbell squats uses every muscle in the body even the eye lids!!!! Be careful when you do your snatches with dumbbells because unlike a barbell you can go deep between the legs which can lead to using too much back and not the legs. I concentrate on sticking my giant rump out as far as possible “Romanian style”!!! http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do;jsessionid=B8FDDC02 4146195990759ECC86926AB2.ba08?article=315one2 -Clayton- |

BillB...remember when we were doing snatches with the Rolling Thunder..??..Those bad boys really sink in..or just using 2" handles on the dumbbells really makes you concentrate on proper form..!!!

I do the one arm over barbell because I think it is a more natural movement. I don't like heavy barbell lifts because I have had some bad shoulder/pec problems. More freedom of movement in the one arm and I think you probably incorportate other muscles more because of the balance issue.

I have a bad shoulder (impingement), so I've been doing dumbell
snatches, dumbell bench press, and dumbell standing presses for the
last three months. I feel I'm getting a great workout with the
dumbell snatches, and can go just as heavy with my bad shoulder.
The dumbell lets me rotate the hand to a position that doesn't bother
my shoulder.
Lyle - You say you've worked up to 145 for triples. I just made 120 for a triple today. So I'm curious, what is your best WOB? I would think there would be a strong correllation between dumbell snatch and WOB. |

For a little variety to the one arm snatch, I will go a bit lighter and do dumbell snatches with both arms at the same time. Or one arm snatch with only one leg. It's a bit tougher than you think.

Does anyone have any video of a dumbell snatch? I have tried them, and I
just feel totally awkward (not that my barbell snatch isnt awkward also) |

over at Brad Cardoza's web page--which I can't remember off the
top of my head but it's pinnaclefitness or something...there's a vid page and there's one of him doing a db snatch. It's the only one I can think of off the top of my head. PS, it's going to feel awkward until you just decide to give in and do it...at least that's how it was for me. http://www.pinnaclestrengthandfitness.com/images/ 1_hand_snatch_150x5.AVI So telling you about it made me want to go watch it again.
