couple questions

Don’t mean to be a pain in the old arse, but I have a few more questions:

 

Is there much difference between throwing a hammer with a rattan handle and PVC one?

 

Does anyone throw anything with his weaker arm to save strength for other events?  The w.o.b. wears my shoulder out so I was thinking of throwing it with my left hand.  It may make 6 inches difference, but might spare my shoulder for other events.

 

What is a good food to eat to give energy during the day?

You'll get different answers from different people on that one.  The correct answer may depend on your throwing style, but I'm not sure.

Some people switch hands for everything after an injury, and I've heard of people who start WOB with their weak side and switch to their strong side above a certain height, so what you're suggesting isn't crazy.

Different people have different takes on what to eat on a games day.  I'm usually not terribly hungry on games day, at least until after the games, so I usually just take a sandwich along.  The real key for lasting all day, for me, is caffeine.

1 I have found that I can throw just about the same with either rt or lt. " I practice the hammer first then the weights. Then I go back to hammer right befor I put the stuff back up. I get about 10' more after I'm "wore out"!!!"

2 If you read anything about the Butchett's you need to stock up on the Mt Dew and circus peanuts!!!!!

1.  I do know many who throw (other) handed on WOB usually those with SHoulder injuries so if you can get the same hieght go for it..

2.  I do not think it is so much a PVC or rattan issue as it is an issue of "whip" created with the handle, and that is usually due to the diameter of the tubing you use for the handle///  I say PVC just for the sake of time..  but that is me.

And the Pre and post drinks from   www.jsnitro.com    have proven to be pretty effective to get you up, going , and recovered from a long days throwing...

Being a newbie, I can't really answer the first two, but food, now there's a subject I know!  :D  And yes, my brother will tell you to have circus peanuts and Mountain Dew...  And he holds something like three or four world records, so whatever...

I like the Powerbar harvest bars in toffee chocolate chip.  They taste better than most energy bars, are highly portable and give me just the right mix of sugar and things that take longer to be digested.  I, unlike some people, am ravenously hungry all the time.  Whether or not it's game day!    So I just pack along those powerbars or other small granola bars.

And I hear Red Bull works for some people (like my brothers), but I can't stand the taste.

Hey, I finally got to use that smily... 

Oh, and I guess I should qualify my granola thing...  It's not the ONLY thing I eat, that's what I have besides whatever they serve us for lunch.  That's usually where I get my protein for the day.  A powerbar in the morning, and one in the mid-afternoon to keep me awake and energetic.

I'm with Wayne on the caffeine.I usually have a couple of cups of coffee in the morning.It gets me alittle wired.I don't like those speed pills like "yellow jackets" or "yj stingers" because they are too strong for me.Through out the day I'll snack on a banana or sandwich to keep me up.I don't eat enough to feel "full" because then I don't feel like moving.Gatorade or some kind of sports drink help on warm days.If you are throwing all 9 events it will kick your butt a little.You will make at least 27 all out attempts,3 for each event,through the course of the day.Drink water all day and have fun.Just my 2 cents.

I always throw with my dominant arm. Most of your throwing power does not come from your arms think of them as a wet noodle between you body and the implement you are throwing. Last year after my first couple games I was sore all over my upper body. This year I am not sore at all and my marks are better (still not great, but better). You power should come from the legs and trunk. As for food drink plenty of beer the night before Haggis dipped in coffee in the morning. More beer and scotch after the competition. This diet will give you the highland body type!!

I encourage my fellow competitors to eat as much as they can during the games and especially at the break if there is one.  Having a stomach full of food destroys your efforts.  Nothing,  I mean nothing, you eat during a competition is going to do anything for your marks.  It is the oldest myth around.  It takes a minimum 90 minutes to digest any food.  You are best off eating a simple breakfast around 6 AM so that by 8 it is digested and is of use as an energy source.  Even with that, eating a pile of waffles will not aid you in anyway.  The meal you eat the nighta before is your ture energy source.  One or two apples in the morning is plenty.  During the games, the best recomendation I have is honeg from a squeeze bottle, or grapes, and only about a hand full.  Grapes refresh, and have more easily digestable sugars, and don't take up much space in the stomach.  Protein bars in the morning are all right, but the fact is most of them are glorified candy bars with a  bit more soy tossed into the mix.  That is my ever so humble opinion.

Yeah, the truth is that a lot of sweet drinks (e.g., sodas) contain fructose-based sugars, so the sugar has to be processed by the liver before being converted to glycogen.  Gatorade does NOT use fructose, and so is far preferable.

I tried that grape thing once, and I was so hungry by 10, it wasn't funny!  Once I swiped a protien bar from my dad, I was fine, though.  But that's just anecdotal, no real science there...    Part of my problem may have also been that I was still nursing a 4 month old...

Speaking of glorified candy bars, anyone tried the Snickers Marathon?
