Pros? Cons? Personally I love the SS Bar. As a Highland Athlete I feel it is better for me. I am not trying to improve my 'squat' I am trying to improve my leg strength / Power.
Thoughts? |

How exactly does the safety bar shift the weight or does it?I recently discovered one in a corner of the gym I train at off and on.Just curious to learn a little more.

to me it seems to help you keep better form. you can also use your hands at heavier weight.

Does it force you to sit back and straight or what?Next time I go to that gym I'm gonna give it a whirl for kicks.I found it after a pretty tough,by my standards, workout.I didn't have much in the tank to go playing with something new.

I feel you can use the 'body' a lot more with a bar. Whereas with the SS Bar all the work is directed to the quads, Hips etc. And yes you gotta stay more upright. If you really want to torch your legs then hold onto the parts that sit over your neck. You have to keep your arms in and use all leg I know HBIII started using one and he loves it If I remember correctly. |

Bingo!I was kinda thinking that when I looked at it.Maybe I've found another weapon of mass destruction to impliment in training. My squat numbers have started to stagnate,so I've taken a little breather from weight training for 2 weeks. Thanks for the info.I'll give it a ride Monday when I start up again.Oh,by the way,I get a kick out your smarta$$ remarks on this site.

This is really a no-brainer...the Safety Squat bar puts
you in a proper posture for the throw (A)...it reduces pressure on the patellular tendons "if" you keep your shins perpindicular to the ground...you can really load up the "rear-chain" with up to 38% more weight than a regular Oly bar...we have a couple of thrpws specific squats that we train with that really are SPECIFIC to the the throws that can only be duplicated with the Safety Squat although we have a new set up that maybe the best set up ever in terms of S-P-E-C-I-F-I-C-I-T-Y ! |

The safety squat bar is superior for several reasons.
1.) Enables you to squat in a more upright position - without the knees wandering farther ahead of the toes. 2.) Can use more weight and achieve higher tension/overload. 3.) You can self-spot yourself by pushing with your hands off your knees or grabbing the rack - it's best if you have a rack made for this. 4.) It takes all the negative pressure off the shoulder girdle. Be careful about applying to much specificity to weight lifting. Weight training is not specific to any particular sport. The objective of lifting weights is to get strong. That's it. Energy to improve the competition throws and speed are better spent on the specific skills themselves and bridge activities such as plyos, sprints, et. al. I tend to be wary of specific "lifts" created to improve a throw, a punch, or a kick. It's very easy to get caught up in doing to many things and accomplishing nothing. It usually leads to overtraining. Stick with the basics and practice specific skills. |

James I agree. Like Bill Wallace said 'If you want to be a great kicker...kick
"BTW, he is back in OK in august at a buddy of mines school. That said, To me squatting with a normal bar is just 'improving your squat'. I feel the SS Bar give better leg development in many ways. We just need to build power and strength from our legs, to me the SS Bar does a better OVERALL job than the normal bar squat. |
