Anyone have any real experience with these?

Due to scapular issues, am on the lookout for leg power building without the crush of 400lb squats..

just wondering out there.

please advise re: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/mahler19.htm

Oh Great and Wise King of All that is Neoprene,

Hindu squats for thousands of reps won't do a thing for your leg power. I'd suggest doing one legged squats. Rest the top of the off foot on a bench behind you (you can use it to help stabilize). Down to parallel and back up. I've done 225 this way and it is BRUTAL. You can get an excellent workout with 135. Be VERY careful and start light as your knee is extremely exposed. You will get a great leg workout with good throwing carryover (really emphasize the up and forward thrust of the hip at the top of each rep) but without needing to put 400+ on the bar.

Cheers,

I think the type of surgery he is recovering from pretty much rules that out.

What about step ups?  I believe there were some good posts on here a while back about that.  It's essentially a one leg excercise and wouldn't require large weights.

It also seems naturally a bit more stable in that position than one legged squats.

Hey Marbry,, me and the Alabama Plowmule have been known to do the step up for a few. I kinda like them, usually we do them after we squat and dead though.

Great one, how about belt squats? They sell this in Iron Mind as you may know. I still have the copy of you in Iron Mind doing what looked like a weight over bar for reps on a set of blocks. Awesome.

When I went back to fronts after the cuff job, it was painful, but I think it helped it recover.  Seemed like the bar sat right on the sweet spot or the dude left the blade in there.  It was an attention getter.  I will wear a couple shirts for extra padding in the delt area, but it is gold now.

If you can hold dumbells, you could do dumbell squats and lunges as well as step ups.

My feelings are if you can squat 4 plates, then don't get too worked up about not being able to squat, go for high bench step ups, one legged squats etc. High rep Hindu squats will not do anything for you, as mentioned above, rather do pylometrics in this instance.

Pistols (one legged squats with non working leg out in front, not behind), will kick your butt much worse than anything else and add to your two legged squat base.

I have very little respect for leg press machines with regards to strength gains, but thats just me.  I love seeing guys put 1000lbs on it and they are not able to squat 3 plates to save their lives.

Hey, Jason I tried doing step ups at the gym but other than benches all they had were those cheesy plastic stackable aerobic things.  I don't trust those with any kind of weight, too unstable.  I did do some on the steps at home.  Hug a big rock and go.

I intend to hit at least that 12' in wob this year.  Going to try and make it to Montgomery too.

I feel your pain man, thats all we had at my gym and they wobbled like crazy. When I realised a bench works better, is more stable and utilises more hamstrings I was a happy guy. I'll be doing alot of those inseason for throwing.

Marbry,

Usually we stack up about 8 or so of the Olympic bumper style plates. This usually gets it up there and is a lot more stable than the pastel chick things.  Montgomery rocks dude. Lots of laughs and love.

I think truck pulling/pushing is a great workout too but the key word here is offseason. In season the ground contact time for such an activity is too long and it will make you SLOOOOOOOOOOW. I think a little light sled dragging for active recovery is OK in season but I would avoid heavy dragging/pushing.

Cheers,

Carlos

Hindu squats are great for building leg power and explosiveness.  But doing high repetition squats in this style is not really condusive to building type of power and strength needed for Highland Games.

Matt Furey - who wrote the article you linked to - is focusing on the Hindu squat and its uses in martial arts and personal combat.  While Matt has had a lot of success with his methods, I think he overly denigrates lifting weights.

I would suggest looking into doing Hindu Squats, and Pistols (one-legged squats) with dumbbells or even better, kettlebells ala Pavel Tsatsouline.  You can develop tremendous power and strength.  See this set of articles.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbinfo/.php?page=Kettlebel ls

As much as is written about the squat, you can get around doing barbell squats.  You can develop tremendous strength using presses, deadlifts and olympic lifts.  Combine these with the Kettlebells and you should do fine.

I would think that pushing or pulling any vehicle would put too much stress on the shoulders..however a sled that has a waistbelt would be a good workout for the legs and lower back without stressing the shoulders..

I push with short choppy steps like Babb told me to do.  It is just like he said, fast choppy hack spit and barf.  Rest and do that again.  I move my feet fast when I do it.  Well, fast for me.  I do a full leg day first, then I aim the truck toward the house and go, with todays gas prices you would think this style of training might be in vouge.  I use F 150 ex cab 4 x 4.  I have not done this since I am rehab with the torn quad, can't get the truck in the rehab room.
