I'm at rope's end. I'm tried of being able to kill other Ams in the LWFD and HWFD, but still lose to them in overall scoring because I get absolutely crushed in the stones.
What are your best stone throwing drills? I've got a half-decent 18-lb field stone to work with, but I'm at rope's end. I'm probably going to drive up to MF Athletic (Cranston, RI) sometime this week and buy a cheap 16- and 20-lb shot put so I have a "more regular" object to put reps in with. Any and all HELP would be greatly appreciated. |

I think Alen H. said working on incline bench press helps. I suggest checking the training logs and the database for the people with the best stone throws in your class and send them a personal message. best thing you can do, in my oppinion.

Hey Scott, no quick fix with the stones but I can find some time if you want. The drills are the same drills rotational throwers have been doing since the mid -late 70's. 360, mirrior, south african and a few more. Don't start getting carried away in the training hall try to bench your way to greater distances-I can cover the proper wayto bench for the shot also. I have several (14lb-22lb) old shots, including my retro BERG (thanks Russian Jr T/F Team 77') we can use. DD Stewart 508-404-6405 cell |

Oh, wow. Thanks, Don.
I've got a string of games over the next couple of weekends, but I'll give you a call/text when I see an opening. Unless you want to try and do something on a Sunday; I'll take what I can get. I know a few drills from college, but I was never really a shot putter and it's pretty clear that I'm missing something critical. Thanks again. |

Scott - I think I have resurrected my stones this year by focusing on three things; 1. Elbow the midget and punch the giant - most us am's use our left arm to create SIDEWAYS separation NOT a vertical block lift. Dave barron has told me for 3 years that I am finishing sideways NOT up - went out today and lifted/punched a few out instead of yanking block elbow and staggering sideways.....and they went farther. 6 weeks work. 2.Even on Braemar - keep head turned back and shoulders turned and wait 'till the block happens. 3.Use your damn legs - slow down and lift w that left leg. And do the drills EVERY time!

I agree with Don. Too many people get caught up with the lifting.don't
get me wrong, it's certainly helpful to be strong but it's really about the technique and I am pretty sure your strength isn't an issue. You have a great offer there from Don, but if you want an extra set of eyes, post a vid here or on Facebook...I am more than happy to throw my two cents in. |

Hey Scott, first of all I'd like to point out that while being able to
bench a lot is helpful, squats are not recognized enough in a big stone putter. If you're not driving the throw with your legs, you're losing a lot of potential power. Another big thing I want to point out is that a lot of people have a really short push because it feels faster. You need to really load up your back leg and get your shoulders facing the back of the trig. (I hope I'm making sense. If somebody can word this better, please do.) You may feel slower cause it will take longer to get to the punch, but you'll have a lot longer time to build up a lot of force and really get behind the stone. Hope I helped. I'm only a lightweight, so don't be fooled if you look me up and I'm not hitting 40 on my braemar, haha |
