Fellas,

Sports Illustrated just ran an awesome article on what the NFLers do.  I think nearly all of it is online.  Here's a tidbit:

"In fact, Jones doesn't even know how much he can max on the bench press. He hasn't worried about that since his days at Florida State because he's not training to be a weightlifter. He's training to be an athlete."

They've got some videos and pics too.

JAson...I'm glad you made this post...I was flying
back from a clinic and had a good laugh looking at
the TOUGH workouts....this may set training BACK
another...40-years to the 60's...the most advanced
workout (Barbers) is all screwed up in terms of
motor unit recruitement...some of the others have
the word TOUGH...mixed up with the word HARD...!!!

Don't work HARDER...work smarter !!!
Have a GREAT Day !

"Weightlifting (Mondays and Wednesdays)

1. Dumbbell bench (3 sets of 10) 70 to 90 pounds
2. Dumbbell incline (3x10) 65 to 75 to 80 pounds
3. Dumbbell curls (3x10) 70 pounds plus bar
4. Shoulder press (3x10) 60 to 80 pounds
5. Shoulder shrugs (3x10) 100 pounds
6. Abs crunches (200 reps/day plus another 100 reps after dinner) "

Wow this is what a 325# lineman does for weight training?  He curls the same weight that he benches?  WTF?  300 crunches a day?  WTF?  I'm so confused.

I think that they mean each hand.  Still... the best is shoulder shrugs... 100 pounds.  I know they are kidding us, because no self-respecting football player does an "ab crunch".  Sit-up... sure... ab-crunch?  Not unless he is spening QT with a chick.

Guys , believe me - we did NOT train like that...I've got no clue where he's getting that stuff...we trained like Highlanders except we ran our asses off and did tons of agilities....Hell, I was doing inclines w/ 150's 15 years ago at 270lbs, this 325lbs weiner is using 80's???....my strength coaches Dave Redding (now with San Diego) and Jerry Simmons ( w/ Indie) would call that a weak dawg pussy workout. Now, in this guys defense he may have some serious injury issues that keep him from "proper" training - lots of that happens....but he may also be an "athlete" (term of derision used by slow, small white boys born w/ no talent dust- no racism here- just facts) who can get by on "talent"....me @ 28 years old= 505 bench, 375 incline,365 power clean,610 squat....yeah , we trained.....

I should have thought of you when I stumbled on this last week.  Read through and see one of the responsed of Ken Leistner to what NFLers are like.

Jason - Ken laid it out pretty good - we were all freaky in some way - talent, size, speed or natural football instincts - you had to have at least 2 of these to even get invited to a camp...much less survive and make it.............Geisler - 275lbs...and got a hell of rhomboid spasm from doing it too.Haven't done any behind the necks in alooong time .

I'd love to be an NFL strength trainer one day.
