Geesh Carlos -
Give me a break, ... athletes in many sports use age divisions. If you don't like it, you don't have to compete in the Masters. Many others do enjoy it. Do you bitch all the time? That's pitiful. -K |

No Kevin, I don't bitch all the time but I do comment on changes that I feel may lessen the sport and its traditions. I suspect that if you ask Bill Scruggs why he put me on as one of the original MWC board members it was because he wanted someone there who represented a highly traditional viewpoint (pick up the phone and call Angus if you really want to know). I accepted, so clearly I don't have a problem with the MWC concept. I do have a problem with games creating so many divisions and groupings that every participant is a champion. That is what happened to powerlifting. That is what Craig was pointing out. And that is what I was agreeing with.
I won't take any cheap shots against you. The only accusation that I will make is that you clearly love the sport. You have a different set of beliefs than I. A diversity of opinions is a good thing and I respect that. I enjoy seeing you post your opinions (even though I often disagree) because then we can have a meaningful debate which is healthy. So party on. And incidentally, I retired from throwing a couple of years ago.

Carlos-
So, it appears to me that you helped Billy during the early stages of the MWC inception, which always included the multiple age-group idea, and then you criticize the idea of multiple age-groups in competition. That conflict in your opinions, between then and now, is the part that continues to baffle me - not the mistaken part about everyone should be called a champion. We agree on that part: if everyone is a champion, then no one is a champion. No person that I've met or talked to, and certainly not the MWC, has expressed the idea that there should be so many divisions that every person is a champion .. even if that is an exaggeration to make a point .. its simply a false premise, is it not? or its an intentionally misleading criticism. I've volunteered a big part of my career in supporting and promoting athletics competitions including age-group based divisions because so many aging athletes enjoy a peer-based competition among equals, so to speak. So, its disheartening to hear criticisms of a concept which we've based so much time and effort on. I compete in both Masters Weightlifting and Masters Highland Games and there are many hundreds of participants who invest great amounts of their lives in the sports. We all know that the moments are fleeting and the titles are short lived, but why discredit the concept? What changed between the time you helped Billy with MWC and now where you criticize its founding concept? -K |

Nothing. Having a once a year event with small age groupings but a large number of athletes in each group is fine (indeed the size of the groups is what drove the smaller age range groupings). That is an actual competition. Running around calling yourself a "world record holder" in an event when you've never put up a number that would even be noticed in an amateur competition is ridiculous. When a games announcer is habitually calling half of the competitors on the field "world champion" or "world record holder" it cheapens the sport and the concept of greatness. There are times when it is appropriate (you have Sean, Dan, and Matt all on the field together at pleasanton tomorrow). But right now it is getting totally out of hand.
The tradition of the games was to find the strongest man in the village. I love that tradition. The manhood stones were about proving you were a man. They didn't have 'lightweight manhood stones' so that you could prove you were just part of a man. |

Oh, okay -
It was your sweeping generalization of the "five year age divisions" that initially caught my eye. As the defender of the MWC, I sometimes have to play my part as the guard dog. And if the dog doesn't bark once in a while, he may lose his job. Party on, -K |

What a bunch of butt hurt whinning babies. If it ain't about you--it ain't about you. Masters, Lightweights ad infinitum. If you have a problem with the age brackets in the Masters and you're a Master then, don't throw with them. If you have a problem with anything to do with Lightweights and you're under 200 lbs, don't throw with them. If you're neither, you're just blowing air about it now, aren't ya?

As usual - for NASGA - we have wondered off topic - oh look a butterfly just flew past my window - and instead of talking about David's excellent world championships; here we are talking about the 13 age and weight divisions at MWC2014.
It would have been nice to have had the fact that MWC2014 next week will be the largest gathering of heavies in history mentioned - surely a cause for at least a small pat on the back for Kevin and Bill's work since the event was founded - but in truth I never expected the 3rd staging of the Masters in Inverness to be appreciated for what it is - something unique and special - on here. For me - our sport has one world professional champion - the winner of David Webster's annual event. We now have 13 Master's Champions - and who knows - as the ranks of over 40's swell; we may have a couple more in years to come. Over 90's taking to our field in 8 years time? Why the hell not? Anything that encourages folk to throw and socialise as they get older is a good thing. By the way - and this next bit is heavily censored - it is absolute 100% bullshit - a complete and utter myth - to say that the tradition of Scotland's Highland Games was simply to find the strongest man in the village. The tradition of Scotland's Highland Games was - and still is - to get communities together to enjoy competition and each other. They are not - and never have been - just about the ONE man who is strongest. Oh look .... another butterfly .... |

Is this the same David Webster who, along with Dougie Edmunds, ruined Magnus Ver Magnussen's career by stacking events against him in 1996? Who picked and chose athletes, or rather selected who not to invite to to WSM for all the years he was involved in it?
A championship is only as legit as the competitors the promoter allows to compete. I have my doubts about this.

Hang on, Mike. You have that wrong. David and Magnus are good friends.
David continued to be an announcer for WSM until very recently, but it hasn't been his show for a very long time. There's another name associated with WSM that you didn't mention (which interestingly doesn't show on the WSM wikipedia page), who has been responsible for many of its ills. It just so happens that WSM history came up in dinner conversation with David and Magnus last year after the NHHG. David smiled and said some nice things, although he was surprisingly frank about other things, I think because it was in defense of the athletes. Magnus, on the other hand, went on a colorful rant (and NOT about David) that I deeply regret not catching on film. Young Billy Crawford's eyes almost popped out of his head. There's also a myth that David avoids certain athletes in selections. There is more to the story, which David is too much of a gentleman to talk about. Basically, for provincial reasons, quite a few athletes have been made unavailable for David Webster events. David Webster has always tried to act in the best interest of strength sports. He is a true gentleman. |

I really enjoyed reading the posts. In high school and college I truly loved sports. When I turned 50 I thought only casual running and weightlifting was left in my life (softball is too slow). Then I saw Andy Vincent at the Austin Celtic Festival. My 13 year old son and I were hooked. I found the passion of athletic competition again. Something I thought was gone in my life. I will never be world champion. The best I have ever finished is second in a few meets, but boy was I proud. These posts show me that all of you love this sport and that's what matters. And it is growing. Im 53 now in my 3rd year and dread the day I will have to stop. Have a great day all.
