From Ironmind: Matt Vincent just won the 56-lb. weight for distance (Dan McKim was second) and thereby the Highland Games world championships.

Matt Vincent wins his 2nd World Championship over Dan McKim in a fantastic battle today in Scotland. Because this sport is so patently awful at promoting itself, understanding the internet, or using a camera, literally no one knows about it.
Still, congrats to Matt. He worked hard for this.

I had the pleasure of attending the early part of the World Championships on Saturday morning on my way south to Newcastle for a much needed pre-MWC2014 family vacation.
On the plus side it was great to see so many great Heavies in action here in Scotland and chat with some of my favourite folk on the International Highland Games circuit. On the minus side - I had to leave early - and difficult conditions underfoot - made applying the brakes and avoiding a foul in the shot putt very difficult. I don't think that Scotland has ever see a Shot Putt competition of this quality before and it was a delight to be there. Congratulations to Matt! |

Congrats Matso!!
Sounds like it was an epic competition. Gerry's cryptic mention of the shotput foul above is referring to, as I understand it, a foul on a 67+ foot putt by Berger Lambrecht. Wish I could have been there to see it all. |

Great competition, great location...congrats to Matt Vincent for a clutch win, many thanks to the Edmunds family and David Webster. I would have reported some info but I didn't want to pay roaming charges, there were alot of photos taken, I'll write a report up for Ironmind ASAP, still on my way home and Pleasanton this weekend. The top four at Worlds will go at it again with eight other tough pro's.

Gerry need to disagree with the comments regarding the shot putt. In the Highland games quite possibly the best. But not the best shot putt competition ever seen in scotland that for me goes to the Diamond League in Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games Final.

This is a Highland Games website.
I was talking about our World Championships.
I was speaking about the best Shot Putt event staged as part of a Highland Games that Scotland has ever seen. |

I would have posted, but didn't have coverage, either. I will be back to updates here for Pleasanton this weekend.
A great venue and competition! Congrats to Matt on the win, as he put together a full games under pressure. Thanks so much to David, Douglas, Gregor, Steve, Bill, and of course, Linda, for everything. I'm always amazed and honored by the opportunity to compete - thank you so much. |

Verizon charges $10 per 100mb of data in the UK or $200 per Gig. Lack of reporting in understandable.
Congrats to Matt and all involved!

Thanks Everyone. It was a great week in Scotland as a whole. Made for one of my most memorable experiences ever. Looking forward to seeing Dan, Scotty, and Seabass again this coming weekend. Plus the rest of these savages. No free weekends, always going to be a fight.

Yes, I am back now as well and will put in my 2 cents worth. Having had a front row seat as the scorer, caber shagger here are some of what I thought were highlights.
Day 1 - Berger fouling 67'1" in the stone. Berger setting the world championships record with a throw of 61'6" on his first attempt. All 10 athletes were over 50 feet. - Dan setting the WC record in the heavy hammer with a throw of over 124 feet. - Scott Rider with a big PR to win the lwfd and then an extra of over 91 feet. - Matt V getting the caber over on the first toss. I thought there would be shoot out but only 3 men turned the caber and to me that is a perfect competition caber. - The rainbow arching over the wob comp with The Dunfermline Abbey in the background, site of King Robert the Bruce's grave (actually his body but his heart is interred elsewhere). - Unbelievably tight between Matt, Dan and Scott. Each man continued to come through and show that they are champions with grace and determination on the first day. Day 2 - Matt Dougherty throwing his brains out to place second in the heavy stone and light hammer. This was a difference maker in the overall as he snatched up high places. - Matt and Daniel coming down to the last event with Matt winning the hwfd by 4 1/2" and to be champion. Thrilling. Big congrats to Matt. - Matt V completing the McGlashan stones after the challenge caber. This is historic to me to see Matt and Daniel in this gripping 1 - 2 battle in these big games ala Arthur Rowe and Bill Anderson in the 1960's. Bill

Gerry you don't need to point the obvious out to me i know this is a Highland Games website I also know that a lot of guys on here come from a T&F background. From what some other posters say of all ten throwers being over 50ft in the light putt then yes it more than likely is the best HIghland Games Putt contest on our shores. |

As you now concede - and as I originally remarked - it was the best ever. Nice to see the World Championships come home after 5 years |

The Scottish Heavy Events World Championships will be held in Pleasanton next year as part of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco's 150th Annual Scottish Gathering and Games. This is the continuation of the games that David Webster started in 1980, prior to last year there were only two, the SGHA (Scottish Worlds) and David's.
