Scotland vacation

My wife and I plan to travel to Scotland in 2021 for our 10 year anniversary. Along with taking in the beauty of the country, I want to throw in a games or two and lift some challenge stones.

I hope there is someone here who has travelled the country and can offer some insight on how I should go about it. Do I just circle some places on a map and find hotels in those towns or villages? Is renting a car a ridiculous notion?

We want to befriend and engage with the locals and experience Scotland on a deeper level than just seeing the main tourist attractions. I think we'll go for 4 or 5 weeks, so our time won't be so compressed.
