    Posted: 10/29/10 at 2:16am

Just finished my sheaf, put it on the scales and it's 20 pounds on the nose, thought it would be closer to 16. Should I cut down the weight or leave it as is? I throw with the old men so I guess I most likely will not to be throwing a 20 pound at the games. Will throwing a 20 pounder hurt or help me?

Thanks,

Randy

Lighten it up Randy, it will mess with how you throw them 16#.
Anywhere between 15-17# is exceptable.

Reworked it last night and now I have it at 17 pounds. Two layers of burlap.

Randy,

Keep it light and tight. Over time the bag will want to expand, as it hits the gorund more and more.

Did a little tweaking last night, it's 16 now. Got out yesterday evening and tried it out, not to bad may be a tad to big but I can work with it. Also found out that if I grip my for closer to the head that I get a better throw, I was gripping to far back and loosing some power. I have been use to the big for I bought at the hardware store, but found one of the older lighter forks and now will have to get use to it.

I would say leave it at 20. I live with the theory that it is better to practice with more weight than you will have to throw in competition, so you can throw better when it matters. But I'm just a C Class, so what do I know?

I would suggest throwing with the weight that you will be throwing in comp. Yes train in the gym with heavy weight, but when it comes to throwing, if you use a heavier weight, it will throw off your timing. In my humble opinion, timing is more important that raw power. You may be able to move a lot of weight, but if you're not doing it in the right sequence with precision, you still won't be reaching your full potential. That's what I think anyway.
