This is interesting. I mostly do deep full squats, exclusively for much of the year. Certainly, if I had to choose, I would only ever do full squats, obviously. However, there are many, many elite throwers who use partial squats extensively, especially at certain points in their training cycle. And this is not a new idea, having been common in some circles since the 1970s. You really think guys like that are doing that just to stroke their ego? You do not believe there is any benefit to a thrower in doing these periodically?

BTW, I hope it is clear I am not trying to be disrespectful or argumentative in any way. You are doing great work and it is clearly working very well for you. This is just one of those points that really interest me, since there are intelligent and experienced individuals on both sides of the issue.

Sort of like squatting very heavy for 1-3 reps 4-6 times a week all the time vs. squatting heavy for sets of 3-6 reps twice a week most of the time. You know what I mean?

Peter-

I think strength training is very simple.  My goal in the gym is to get stronger overall and faster.  I don't think half reps do that.  The only reason these would apply is to move heavier weight a shorter distance quicker.  I personally think it would be more beneficial to use less weight full range and push the speed.

Got the chance to throw last weekend at the Kickoff games in Dallas held by the always awesome TCAA.   We had a small group and got to really spend some tie working on things.  I feel like i am right where i want to be going into The Arnold this coming weekend.

The main thing i got to accomplish was get the stupid monkey off my back with WOB.  I did not throw anything amazing height wise but 14,15,16 with no misses and a couple good pulls at 17'.  With a bit more rest and good competition energy i think it will not be a problem most of the season.

Last week of peaking I will train MON-WED then back off.  Throw when i can depending on the weather.

The Arnold has come and gone.  Now time to get back to work.  I have looked at the games I have coming up and started laying out when I need to peak again and how training blocks need to fall into place.  Again I have to try and maximize my time so that I am again throwing my best in July and again in September.  I have other games before then and will train through them.  What this means is that I will still back off a day or two but training % will be whatever the week dictates.  I may be tired or a bit beat up for some of the comps.  This is OK since I want to be at my best for Championship Games later in the season.

My next stretch I will be peaking for is:

Antigonish, Nova Scotia for IHGF World Team Championships 7/13

Portland Highland Games 7/23

North American Championships, Enumclaw, WA 7/27-28

This gives me 18 weeks.  Since my regular off season was cut short I will go back and do 10 weeks of strength then 5 weeks of speed followed by a peaking cycle.  This should put me in the right position to throw my best.  Looking forward to training heavy again.  I am also going to keep my conditioning at 3 days a week and throw 2 times.  Really working my weak points hammer and caber.  After that stretch I will have to see where I am and how I feel.  I know in the next 18 weeks I have two big international trips for games in Victoria, BC and Iceland, building a new house, and my job requires a bit of travel.  Just have to make the most of my time.

THROWING GOALS FOR SEASON:

obviously I am going for PRs across the board.  But here is what I am chasing.

Braemar:  46'

OpenStone: 63'6"

Hwfd: 49'

lwfd: 96'

22 hammer: 120'

16 hammer:140'

sheaf: 34'

caber: get better top 3 every time

WOB: 18'

These are all going to be a real challenge.  I would love to hit and break WR in both OS and LWFD but honestly, I need to spend more time getting better at hammers and caber.  That is where the hole in my game is.  The others will be fine as long as strength and speed continue to improve.  Big Year a ahead.  And for my shameless plug.  Everything I do in the gym and in the trig is laid out for you in both books I have written.  No mystery or magic.  So pick them up and start making gains and throwing farther.  I have already gotten lots of messages form people saying that one simple fix changed a throw and added 5 feet.  Still early in the season.

both are HERE and in a bundle pack.

Look at that form.

This has been the warm welcome back to heavy training.  These 1st two weeks of 5 x 5 always kick the shit out of me.  Constant LBP (low back pump)  only thing worse than this is using a weed eater for 10 min.  But training went well hit all my Rxd weights and feel good.  Also got in my three days of conditioning this week and added being able to do a muscle up to my resume of Feats of Fat Guy Strength.

SWU:

added using the hip circle and this really helps warm my hips up a ton.  Check it out on www.howmuchyabench.net

4 rounds:

20 yards front monster walk

20yrds backwards

20 yrd side shuffle each way.

Lots of rolling in between each round.

Training:

Snatch:

bar x 5

135 x 3

185 x 3

225 x 3 x 5

Clean:

bar x 5

135 x 3

225 x 3

275 x 3 x 5

(These weights are around 75% of my Training Max.  Since I am lifting heavy on day 1 and 2 on day three things are a bit lighter so that I can make sure I am adding some speed and explosive lifts in at the end of the week.  I am also working technique on these as well.  Full Range cleans and snatch.  Hope that some of this will carry over after the 10 weeks.)

Conditioning:

Did my 13.2 wod for the CF open.  However made some modifications because I refuse to do anything with something as light as 115# for 10 min.  So I changed the Rxd to something I found more fun.  225 for the overhead press and 315 for the deadlift.  I just setup two bars and went to town.

WOD 13.2 (Clydesdale)

10Min AMRAP

5 shoulder to overhead (so 1 clean and 5 presses) @ #225

10 Deadlift @ #315

15 Box Jumps @ 24"

I managed 5 rounds and 13 reps so 163 reps total.

PWO: little pukey and lots of writhing on the floor

Don't forget to check out my ebooks Training LAB and Throwing LAB.  Training LAB is great Block training for any strength athlete.  Throwing LAB is for Highland Games throwers, if you are already throwing or looking to throw but don't know how to, this is your guide.  all available in the jtsstrength Store and www.mattvincent.net

I think the Clydesdale idea for CrossFit would be great and pretty obvious perhaps. Triathlons have been doing this for many years. Likely required weight category of 220 lbs for guys and something analogous for women. You could either do the same WODs, or increase the weights used and perhaps decrease the numbers used on the bodyweight movements.

I would be somewhat surprised if they did not go this route at some point simply because it would widen the field of paying participants.

I like doing it.  However I don't like the idea of weight classes personally.  They are not in a sport where they are trying to prove who is the fittest guy over weight or at any weight, but fittest period.  I also don't care for weight classes in our sport personally.  I just want guys to throw the farthest they can.  all the implements weight the same it is apples to apples always.

I am OK with being bad a the Rx'd crossfit.  I don't want them to conform to me.  I would much rather that if I want to take it seriously I have to adjust to match those standards.

update :  this week has been testing as is my normal week 4

going for rep maxes and I have hit PRs in 4 of 4 this cycle.

squat: 565 x 6
bench: 385 x 4
deadlift: 625 x 4
push press: 355 x 4

This will give me some new numbers to work with for next 5 weeks of strength.  Next week is deload and more throwing.   Training feels good and I am happy that throws are still where I want to be even though the heavy training right now.  Spending a lot of time dialed in on diet and mobility as well.  I think these are some long term items that I need to address.

Next weekend Ill be at the great Loch Norman Highland Games.  Excited to throw and always a strong field out there.  For those of you also in attendance I will have hardcopies of both books with me for sale.

I have a new article coming out in this months POWER magazine and trying to get a bit more Highland games stuff added in there.

Sorry for the lack of updates.  I have been on the road traveling like crazy for the last couple months.  Training is going well as is throwing.  I need to make some adjustments to my program to coincide with my new schedule so my plan is to adjust this speed block to a 2 days a week program and throw 2-3 days a week.

Basically I will take day 3 and split is between day 1 & 2 doing the Olympic lifting 1st.  I also will cut the accessory lifts out.  One of the things I have talked about with some other guys who set up programming I like is that in the later years for an athlete (after 15years of consistent lifting and training)  I can still get the job done and make gains by doing less.  The recovery is more important than the volume during the season.

As far as throws training this is something I have really been slacking on since before the Arnold.  I know that there are talented guys I compete against that can get away with not training the throws very often but I am not one of those.  I depend on my technique being pretty dialed in to throw far.  It is now that time of year to start dialing it all back in.  I am 5 weeks out of the team championships.  Then I will go into Peak training for the rest of the season.  I am as strong as I have been and moving as well.  Now just need to consistently hit the right positions so I can get the work done.

Training yesterday:

Snatch:
130 x 2
135 x 2
140 x 2 x 4

Squat: Speed >2.8ft/sec
135 x 3
225 x 3
315 x 3
365 x 3
385 x 3 x 6

bench:
135 x 3
225 x 3
275 x 3 x 8

throwing training yesterday:

Hammer:
22# x 15
20# x 10

Stone:
17+# x 10

HWFD:
49# x 5

all felt pretty good now starting to play a bit with a traditional three wind in the hammer.  Felt good yesterday I will have to see when I throw sat how it goes then.  Need to feel that push back with the hips on two into three more and a better finish.
