I have a nagging soreness in my left (non-throwing) shoulder. When I bench it hurts if my arms are out, say 85 - 90 degrees, but doesn't if I keep them tight to the body. It also manifests itself in overhead lifts. I doesn't seem to keep me from lifting or training, but it limits the weights I can use. It's been going for about 2 months. When it shows up, it hurts most in the upper arm near my shoulder and runs down the back of my left arm. ideas? |

Edward,
The shoulder is a pretty complicated piece of equipment. So any "diagnosis" on a mesage board probably has only a slight chance of being accurate. Basically you will get..."Yeah, my shoulder hurt like that, and my doctor said it was XXXXXX". So with that being said.... My shoulder hurt like that, and it was the rotator cuff. Pretty common for lifters, throwers, ball players, etc. My issue was an acute rotator cuff injury (stupid javelin!). Heavy inflammation, but luckily no tear (or too small a tear to be detected). Overhead motions are more difficult. Espeacially any baseball style throwing. I feel a pinch with pressing motions, usually when the arm is almost fully extended. Paricularly with more weight. I do not consider myself "injured" as I can lift, and throw, and do endless amounts of flippin' yard work. However, I am "hurt". I am limited on how much I can lift, and which exercises I can do, and how long I can do them. The only reason I push myself if because I have already been to my doctor, an orthopedic specialist, had an MRI, an X-Ray, a cortisone shot, and some Physical therapy. Even with all of that, I still have some issues with range of motion, weakness, and an occational "pinch". (It has been 4 months since the injury). You will want to REALLY consider seeing a doctor. Many times the nagging shoulders can be "cured" with some anti-inflammatory meds, and some at-home PT. First you want to be sure there is no tear, or severe damage. Regardless, I strongly suggest a daily routine of rotator cuff stengthening and stretching exercises using resistance bands, or very light weight (3 to 5lbs). It is never to early to keep this muscle group healthy. Do a Google search on "rotator cuff exercises" and you will find a lot of information. (Hint: Do the search on the Google Images page for better results. Pretty pictures desribe the movements better than text ). Good luck, hope this helps. KevinD |

Kevin, did you notice the pinch when Lanny was around. It was him poking you in the back of the shoulder with his pitch fork. Same thing happened to me.

Thank you Kevin. I have been doing some rotator cuff work to reduce symptoms, and it does feel a lot better, but seems to hang on. I had asked the family doc about it a year ago after an actual strain and he told me to focus of rotator work and get over my pussitosis or he could do some cutting. But he recommended I suck it up for a while and avoid the knife as long as possible. |

I have that pain in the throwing arm and then with PT ( 10
mon ) a MRI and more pt, it got a little better and I could flat bench
. Then it moved over to the left sholder non throwing arm.
starts at the top and works the pain down the out side till it hits
the bottom of the tri. Feels like the arm is in a
vice, The MRI says its brusitus ( SP )
Years of abuse. The stupid little 2 to 5lb lifts done slowly and
under control are killer. Especialy when in the Gym using the ladys
nice crome wts. But the improvement is worth looking like a
derk. PT started me out the first day with the bands and
the little wts and the stick over head thunbs out and said three
sets at 15 I said you must be kidding. I paint all
day, roll spray, bruch fold tarps, shake out 12 X 12
and bigger tarps and then I do and train for the games. This is sissy
stuff. He said here is the ice and take advill for
the pain, see you in two days, Pain? Ice you got to be
kidding.. He just smiled and sent me on my way. The next I awoke to
pain that I had not felt in the sholders
before. Went back and did every thing I was told. It seemed
stupid but Im doing better. No knife nor poking around,
gluecosomine and MSN and condrodtion every day And I can work and
play. So Im still doing all those little movements 3 X a
week and when I miss I sure feel it.
SOOOOOOOOOOOO go and check with the bone people and then head for the PT and do olny what they say. No more and no lesss.. No macho Im gonna do more and get better faster. You will only slow down the recovery. Back off on the heavy lifts if you can. You will get better. Paul WJ_DoneLoading(); |
