Thanksgiving Point games were awesome. Had a great time. My first
games as an A thrower. I learned a lot and I now realize how far I still have to go. After getting my butt handed to me, I decided to add a lot more throwing to my training. Below is some video of this last weeks WFD and Hammer throws, including my first ever throw in spikes. LWFD. This will also be on my training log but I am going to get as much video up as possible and am looking for any feedback y'all have as I have much to learn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8joY5lu4Qo |

Hey brother, I only watched the hammer vids. I would recommend moving your feet slightly closer together. This will help to allow you to use your hips to move the hammer. Also, try to think about keeping the low point of your orbits off to your right side. This will help to have your final low point dead center on your final orbit. I would also work on keeping the butt lower when the hammer hits its low point as this will give you more pop out of the bottom of the orbit. I've attached a slow-mo vid of my practice throws if that helps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFcC4d487go

The fundamental difference between these two hammer videos is what I would call commitment. Ryan stands essentially upright and winds the hammer around his body, while Brian leans back and uses his body to wind the hammer around the combined center of gravity. By leaning back, you can keep longer arms (a notable difference between the two videos), and use your legs, hips, and torso to accelerate the hammer head.
To make the back-lean work, you need to bend your knees with the first wind, lean back, and only completely straighten your legs on the release. As Brian noted, it's tempting to use a wide stance with the hammer, a kind of automatic response to a task that involves instability. The problem is that a wide stance interferes with hip action and will limit your distances. The best stance is somewhere around shoulder width apart (or, more to the point, narrower than you think). |

Brian, thanks for posting the video and for the tips, especially about the feet. My last practice felt so good, as I was countersinking and whipping it with a good release. Beth
