gentlemen--a few of you have graciously inquired about my whereabouts, about which i am grateful. with pleasanton and the masters worlds coming up soon, i thought i might just stick in here with a little snapshot of how things are now in tennessee... the reconstructed shoulder looks, well, ..reconstructed. kinda knobby, artificial looking. but it feels pretty good and that's good enough for me. (we can't all be as handsome as kerry overfelt or carlos borges). the ruptured duck biceps is no better, no worse. imagine strapping a small dead animal to your upper arm, that's it. best recent lifts: full squat 350 x5 (felt terrible, crushing my upper back, thus the recent inquiry about hindu squats or other alien methods) deadlifts with small plates and feet on a two inch block: 300 x15 (gets the ol' heart pumpin'; all this email talk from myles and baab is rubbing off on me; too bad their strength levels don't also rub off) ez curl presses: 135 x10 (something about the hand position due to the angle of the curl bar, doesn't stress the new shoulder) #2 Ironmind gripper: 5 reps (still can't catch scruggs on this) best throws so far: (officially unofficial in my back yard this weekend; moderate neoprene, ace bandage all the way up; i am the allen iverson of scottish athletics) 42wob: 15 (bobby dodd weight with 2lbs of duct tape on it) 16lb sheaf: 23-6 (because it was there) 16lb lite hammmer: 91-5 (in my sneakers, no tacky, more speed than before but a lot less power) 28lbwfd: 52-7.5 (this is an ancienttechnologies weight from merle lawless; the distance is pretty disappointing, i can feel it twang in my upper arm after the throw) 17lb open stone: 34-11 from the stand (not bad considering the weakness in the arm/shoulder assembly) caber: 15x90lb; 1:00, 12:00, 12:30 noticeably missing here is the 42wfd; i am just not ready to try it. one of these days, when the arm feels real good. there you go, thanks for asking. best of luck to all throwers, especially the geezers. there is something utterly defiant in this sport, and that rebelliousness is so appealing. especially as physical decreptitude sets in, the spirit soars anyway.

ok, here is the post script: tried the 42wfd: took one very tentative throw, no finish at all, just spin and release--27+ feet then another, slightly more agressive: 30-6 feet then another, with just a little more juice, but no real finish, as in the old days: 31+ feet that was last weekend. today, in my sandals, no wraps, after mowing the pasture, i took one throw: 33+ feet so someday, in the distant future, there may be a future. good luck, stay healthy. |

Sandals? The man's foot is functional, not ornamental.
