I have never traveled to a game warranting flying (yet), until this coming fall. Any recommendations on how to get a fork in the plane? I've heard wrapping in up in a pool noodle and cardboard and taping all that up, but do you still put it in a bag?

And then a question on oversize bags - anyone know of a bag that will fit your fork that is not oversized? link to purchase such? Thanks!

PS- any problems with hammer blades?

I'm not sure about the fork, but I would think the best method for hammer blades would be to take them off the boots, tape a baggie with the hardware to the blades and wrap the lot with bubble wrap along with the appropriate wrenches so you can put them back on the boots when you get where you are going.

I'm just an idiot, pretending to be smart.

The guidance I got for forks when I asked the same question:
1) Protect the tines in whatever way you like, and put it in a snowboard bag that counts a checked luggage.  Current airline fees may make this cost prohibitive.
2) Ship it ahead of you.  This is what I did early this season for NTKO and it was cheap and easy and probably no riskier than letting the baggage slingers handle it.  I put my boots and foam roll in the same box.

Snowboard bag.  This is the bag that I use.  I have never had to pay for an oversized bag, and all my equipment plus the fork will fit into it.

+1 to Tom and Nathan. Throw the fork in a checked bag.  Easy.

Or do what I did my entire career and just don't fly with a fork and borrow one when you get there.  Big smile

lol, no.  Why on earth would you do this?

Put boots in same checked bag, without disassembling them, obv.

I pop the tines off with a rubber mallet, put them in my box, and pick up a standard rake handle from a local Home Depot or Lowes.  They carry the same stock in every store.  Cost is about $8.  Saves the $25 check fee each way.
Unless you don't employ a gear box.  I highly recommend one.  You always have a seat with one, and your gear is right under you seat.

Thanks yall, I have pretty much had the same thoughts as presented here. Just wondering what the consensus was. Probably going with easy.

I like the idea of just taking the tines. I do have a box = they make practice and games SO easy. and such a great seat. I have the typical sized box most of the guys have around here, any idea it is under the "oversized" baggage fee? leave it unlocked but maybe zip-tie the handle in? sorry for all the questions, just trying to be prepared. Thanks for the help yall.

This is the box i own

My box shows up in the regular baggage carousel most of the time.  Sometimes in the oversize pickup area.

Get a set of TSA approved baggage locks.  They will keep your box secure so your stuff doesn't end up strewn all over who knows where, and TSA can open the locks and search your stuff, if need be.  Zip ties will be cut and not replaced.

I picked up my locks from walmart.

Or just fly southwest where they could care less what you're checking. I've never been talked to about my fork with them.
