I've been waiting for this announcement to show up all day and while I don't know that it's my great news to share, it hasn't yet so I'll go ahead.

Mark Valenti shared the news that he and Erin and their crew that puts on the Blind Dog Highlander each August is hosting the Highland Games Women's World Championships next August on the field next to the Highlander field. The equally important announcement came that they will pay travel and hotel costs for the top 10 women in the world to attend and that the pay-outs will equal those of the Men's World Championships.

In watching the announcement, we can all see Mark's passion and commitment to leveling the playing field for Men's and Women's opportunities and payouts. You can follow it on the Facebook, Uncharted  Performance page. If you're not on the FB, someone more tech able than me can link up on comments.

Before speculation and trolling hits an all time high, Mark has already commented that while he hasn't talked to Michelle about the Phoenix Games; no one "owns" the World Championships and all can play along nicely. Also, those who wish to compete in Phoenix of course will be invited to the Blind Dog Championships as long as they are in the top 10. I see that as a win-win.

Thank you Valenti's. Let me know when you need volunteers. I'm in.

You have to stop doing that Juli, if it worked we'd all be doing it.

This is awesome!  Love seeing people step up and do something to support the growth of the sport and all the athletes.  Best of luck to Mark and his crew in pulling this together and making it a great event for the Ladies of the Highland Games.

It is also a great example of how we as a community can stand to do a lot better communicating and working together to move forward.  I'm sure it will all work out for the best in the end as all involved with the standing WWC and the new one have the best interests of the HG Women in mind.

btw, what's the over/under on how long it will take for someone to post links to the Valenti Armageddon videos with him waxing philosophic about the womens' class and/or proliferation of championships in HG.  LOL  LOL

Best of luck Mark and crew, let me know how I can help.

Thanks for sharing the announcement, Juli! Valenti was pretty fired up about the chance to host the top female throwers in the world and was pretty emotional during the reveal. I've known Valenti since I was in college and although he's loud, can be slightly offensive at times, and loves his rum he has always been supportive of the athletes who work hard. He recognizes our talent and acknowledges the need to showcase the women at a venue in the Midwest!

I had a blast at the Blind Dog Highlander this past weekend and I was so impressed with the organization, athlete participation and community support.

Its the backhanded compliments after essentially calling Valenti an obnoxious drunk that's the REAL magic in this thread ;)

On a serious note, it IS awesome to see the women getting their due. Some honest to God athletics going on in that group.

Had you told me there was going to be a NASGA thread about Valenti paying women this isn't what I would have imagined.

That said, way to go Mark! These ladies definitely deserve it.
Cheers,

Carlos

This is a fantastic, and well deserved opportunity, for some truly great athletes.

It's long been an issue that the Pro women haven't received what they are due imo, and Valenti stepping up to fill that void is much needed in this sport.  He did his homework while researching and setting this up, and it will be exactly what it should be.  No one should have hurt feelings over providing the athletes an opportunity at what they deserve.

I was there for the announcement, I'll be there for the game.  Kudos all around to Valenti for this one.
