I need to make a practice sheaf and was wondering what are the approximate dimensions of a 16lb sheaf. I realize they vary from sheaf to sheaf but a decent reference point would help.  Or really, ANY advice on sheaf making would help.  Thanks!

Dragon,

Get a couple of 100# sand bags from the hardware store.  Package of 12 from HarborFreight.com for about $5.

You'll need three 2500 foot rolls of jute twine as well. They weigh 5.5lbs each.  $9.95 each at Lowes.

Get a carpet needle, $0.50 from almost anywhere.  I got mine at Wal-Mart.

Turn bag inside out.  about half way up, 18 inches or so, sew bag almost shut, leave a whole about the size of your fist.  Unravel jute twine into bag, about mid way through the second roll, you'll have to start stuffing the twine in.  Your hand will do fine at first, then by the time your one the second half of the third roll you need a stick or 1" dowel or something to stuff more forcefully.  Once all three rolls are in the bag, sew up the bag.  Don't cut off the extra bag, simply turn it right side out again, the #16 bag will now be inside the top half.  Sew that shut.  Then go all the way around the edge with the carpet needle and some jute twine or poly twine and put a reinforcing twine stitch that goes out about an inch from the seam on either side all the way around the bag.

End result a bag about 18" x 18" x 8", give or take a little bit.  You could probably do it cheaper.  Someone here can tell you how, but that's how I did it.  My bag is just over #16.

You can also get the twine in the big rolls at a farm store or tractor supply company it costs about 20$ but you get 2 rolls wich is a lot more for the money . they also have the plactic and natural twine

Thanks Ed that sounds pretty good.  I'll be giving that a try in the next couple of days.  I have the burlap bags and twine I'll just need to get a good needle and the sewing twine.  Any body else have any good suggestions or tips?

Dragon (Brock), My brother told me to tell you that if you made your sheaf 24ft tall then you'd at least be able to say you hit the bar at 22ft (he figures you'd still find a way to miss hitting it at 24ft).

Ask Tedd how his training is going? This year I refuse to let him beat me...that's if he even makes it to any games.  With his new job, he might actually have a reasonable excuse for not going to games or training at all.   I'm going to go throw and lift NOW!!

Brock, you are too easy, Tedd never said that, I'm just giving you trouble!  Let me know how the sheaf making turns out and we'll get some training days set up this Spring and we'll all have record seasons!

Just hasn't said it YET.  He'll say something along those lines, when and if he reads this post.  I'll be in touch about training, I'm ready to improve like a MOFO!!

IT'S DONE!!  What a pain in the arse!  Next time I'm buying one!  Still rewarding in a way, and I have a new found respect for the sheaf as an event and for the guys who make them.  I still need to see what the weight is (might be a hair light), but at least I have something to practice with.  Now started sanding on my fork.  I will go to the football field tommorow and throw at the top of the uprights.  I read somewhere this is a good way to practice w/out standards and helps with accuracy.  I hope to never miss opening height again, so be ready all of you!!
