Specifically, I'd like to know what Alister Gunn does for his basic strength training routine. I'd be willing to bet that he is most likely more specific in his training. That is, he spends less time with tons of weights and more on event training and exercises that assist in the throws rather than 16 tons of squats and jerks and cleans. Just my impression. Which brings up the next related item, what are other Scots doing for their training? What did Francis B. do for his routine? And as an off shoot of that, I think we should all check out Shannon Hartnett's Strong Woman website and take a look at that weekly routine. I don't think many decathletes would be able to do such a routine. I had to take a nap after reading it! |

Ive checked her website out.......WOW!!!! I know I couldnt do it. Ive been
doing a pretty good throwing and lifting routine. Trying to focus on throwing often and specific, and lifting weights specificaly for core stability and power. Her routine is more like a worlds strongest man routine. Unbelievable. TROB |

Milo Magazine did an entire article a couple years ago on Alistair Gunn. I recall he does front squats, and dumbbell presses, and power cleans and throws frequently. His poundages were quite good, but not earth shattering. I got the feeling he doesn't go crazy on the lifting. Seemed like a common sense approach, no secrets. I can find that article reference if you like. Otherwise, eat prunes. |

Apples, yes. Prunes, not needed. I'll wait until I go tottering off to the land of the Sexy Sixties. I would be very much interested in the Gunn article. No secrets, eh? Rats. I was hoping there was a magic exercise to lift my hammers from 80 feet to 130'.

There is. It's called "practice the 16# hammer" :)
It's magic, but it takes a long time. Francis had an article on him in Milo, too. He trained a lot of heavy squats, as I recall. Might explain why his best events were the heavy weights. - Sean |

Practice! I knew there'd be a catch. By Francis, you mean Brebner?
