and no I am not talking about what Dave Barron does

On coach mac's site he has a pic of a guy with the 35lb T&F weight using a 3 fingered grip. I was wondering if anyone has tried that for the 56 or 28 and did it help you any?

I used the three finger grip in college for the hammer and 35, but have not been able to use it in the highland games.  Not sure why.

Just always feel like I won't be able to hold on to the throw.

That works fine when you are holding with two hands.  I use a hook grip like the Oly lifters do.  Only way I can hold on.

Cool. I kinda figured that was the case. Like Larry I use the hook grip. Once I started using it I couldn't go back regardless of how good my grip got.

I use 3-finger grip with the light weight, though usually only when the
handle is round. If its straight, then I usually go back to 4 fingers.

Seems to actually help my grip a little bit, as my pinky usually would
bring the weight off of my first knuckle when the handle is curved. By
moving my pinky to the inside it makes it for a more secure grip for me
anyway.

I have tried it with the 56, but never had the same grip problems as with
the 28.

I am going to try to go no glove this year, so will see where I stand with
this, without the glove, my guess is that I might go back to 4 fingers just
to have a little more flesh to spread out the blisters on

There is a trade off in everything you do...3-fingered
grip...MORE radius...less grip FORCE !!!

Do your pulls (chin ups or pulldowns) with a towel or
there is a Eagle Talon product (canvas loops for
individual fingers) and don't forget there is a
eccentric (opening hand) componet in grip strength
as well !!!
Have a GREAT Day !

Cool coach thanks. I have really been working my grip from different angles this year. Maybe it will pay off!

Speaking of which:  Hapy, can you reliably close your #3 yet?

Wayne,

nope not quite there. I have probably closed it about 3 times total, but
have found that the more I train with the grippers, the more my hands
just get beat up and the weaker I get. If I take a break for a week or so,
and go at it, I feel the strongest. Not sure what the deal is here - just
cant seem to get over that hump.

I read somewhere that usually if you can do a set of 20 reps on one, then
you are ready to move up, but this doesnt seem to be the case with me.
ARGH! Anyone have any hints/tips on these bastages?

It is notoriously easy to overtrain grip.  I really got nowhere with the CoC's.  At this point, I can reliably close and hold a #1.  Even when I was careful to limit training, I found that my grip would weaken over time.  I suspect that the people who do well with it are predisposed to do so.

Hapy,

Most people just get too much volume on the grippers. Best advice I have heard for getting strong on the grippers is to train them once every day as follows: warm up the hands, take a couple of reps with a gripper you can reliably close as a build-up, finally you close the gripper that you can't close (use your other hand, legs, whatever to help you get it there) and then hold it closed as long as you can. That is it for the day.

Incidentally, gripper closing (crushing strength) is pretty much meaningless for HG. In this sport you want supporting strength which is a very different thing. You'd be surprised at the number of 40'+ HWFD tossers that can't close an Ironmind #2. Holding on to a 56 that is going that far requires incredible grip strength, but not much crushing strength.

Cheers,

Carlos

Ever tried holding a 2 or 5lb. weight between the gripper?I've closed the 1 and 2 fairly easy but, came up a half inch short on the 3.I've only tied a couple of times but,it is humbling to say the least.A friend of mine is nuts about grip work.He says he uses active rest on days he does not train grip.He periodically squeezes tennis balls and something Ironmind calls the snowball. That thing really feels like you're packing snow.I know you don't need crushing strength in HG but it's fun nonetheless.Especially when some really large person can't do what you can do.Grip is very deceptive.

Any of you check out the Gripboard? It's at cyberpump.com. If you are interested in grip it's the place to go. I've been a member for almost a year, it's great. It's a very active message board with alot of cool videos and training advice. There are some strong dudes on there.

I used the 3 finger grip in the hammer and weight when I threw them.  Helped with radius and released some of the tension in the upper body.  I have yet to try it in the highland games....I guess it could work with a hook grip, but I do not know how beneficial it woulod be
with great power comes great responsibility
