Neck pain (couldn't move my head at all) forced me to see my chiropractor this weekend, and it wasn't good. X-rays showed that two disks in my neck and one in my hips have degenerated quite a bit, and a vertabrae in my neck has old bone spurs on it. Neck and back pain are nothing new, and what I usually do is just ice it and see the chiropractor until the pain goes away, then I'm back to the same old stresses. This time I plan on visiting the chiropractor regularly after the pain is gone, but I also want to do whatever is necessary to straighten and strengthen my spine in the long run. I know some of you guys have had a lot worse problems than me, so how about some advice? What works? Are reverse hypers really helpful? If so, anyone have plans for making one? Are any nutritional supplements helpful? If glucosamine-sulfate is good for cartilege, is it good for disks? Any help would be appreciated. |

my problem is L5 siatic region on both sides...the things that work for me besides the chiropractor are lots and lots of reverse hypers, back ham glute raises and inversion.(yes Jason I still have your boots) When I say lots and lots I mean almost every day. I go into the gym to train someone and I hit 3 or 4 sets of bhgr and 3 or 4 sets of rev. hypers and some eay ab stuff. it takes about 10-15 mn. to get done and it makes a big difference...then I might go hang upside down for about 5-7 minutes and then lots of easy stretching. Seems to be working. My hamstrings and low back have been getting stronger as well. I know because the deadlift is going up and I only train it once every 6-8 weeks. |

For what it's worth... I had back pain quite a bit until I started drinking at least a gallon of water everyday. The only thing I can think of is that being properly hydrated keeps my disks "lubed" the way that they should be... Water isn't the "cure-all" by any means, but it won't hurt you either... |

Actually, there is evidence that hydration affects the disks, but this
is the first time I've seen anyone mention this as a treatment issue.

You know what, I drink about 2 gallons a day, and I have never had disk problems. I never thought that they might be related. |

It sure won't hydrate the disks, but might keep them from hurting.

Can't hurt. That is my preferred training model. |

Good excuse for getting drunk, boys!!! We'll just tell our wives or girlfriends that we had to do it because it was "therapy"...
Derk: Ever consider getting a new matress??? May help with stiffness - soreness in the morning... I bought one of those egg crate style foam pads you put on top of the matress and my lower back feels okay in the morning. |
