IF you really want to go for a record, why not use depleted uranium.

With country's wanting to move away from fossil fuels, their should be plenty available.

Advantages:

* More dense then lead or tungstein
* It may glow when throwing it at night

Disadvatage:

* If you want to stay healthy and not want to produce kids with 3 eyeballs, throwing in a HAZMAT suit may slow the sprint across the box and thus defeat the purpose.

Several points come to mind when I read the above:

* To me an essential part of the nature of Highland Games is everybody has different shaped and size toys.  Part of the enjoyment of the games is traveling to other areas and playing with someone else's toys and seeing how they fly.

* Thus, by default, the so called records in this sport are more like benchmarks and in my opinion should be treated that way.

* To make records and rankings anything more than a benchmark, I would fear the lose of diversity in throwing implements which would diminish this sport.

* Because of the non-standardized equipment, many have said the only true measure is head-to-head competition because of the non-standard equipment and to see how another will fair under the competitive pressure.

* Invites based on rankings are only relevant to a very small percentage of those who participate in this sport.  I believe the free market system will take care of this better than any regulation in that events where the small percentage participate will be forced to upgrade their equipment to keep their event relevant in the rankings.

To be perfectly honest...if there is a stone comp with a felt tip marker signifying that the stone weighs 17-lbs. and no record is set will that particular stone  ever be measured and weighed ?

Sorry Coach, I have to play devils advocate here.

This maybe true but we are under a self regulating system.  Any AD worth his weight in salt desires to be a good steward of this sport.  In most cases, those who do not and use the felt marker are exposed over time.

Since I am unfamiliar with selecting by rankings, could the felt marker method actually boast someones rankings enough to effect selection to an event?  Has selection based on rankings been effected in the past?

If none of the above has happened, then I would think it is just another case of cheating by some sad sole who puts way to much emphasize on the wrong things in live.

However, if it has, then it seems to me to be a problem with the selection criteria more than making things more legit.

Just my thoughts

Uranium is approximately 18,900 kg/ Cubic meter

Osmium and iridium are 22,650 and 22,610 kg/ cubic meter respectively. Osmiuim is too brittle and OsO4 is a violant tetroxide with poisonous consequences. Iridium is hard to form and is extremely corrosion resistant.

Coming from the track world, the system of just show up and throw what is there is a lot better.  In shot, discus and hammer there is always a lot of jealousy and whining about peoples equipment being better and thats why they beat others.  The way heavy events go it easier on the competitors too, I can only imagine lugging two hundred pounds of equipment around through an airport. Then having to go through dealing with it all day while traveling.  The current system is more fair and less of a pain.

I  agree with McSanta about throwing other peoples stuff, its more fun.  Unless you go train with Mike Baab I would not be suprised to see an old engine block out there at the next games.  By the way I am training for the highly regarded Dumbass record.

Dummas - an ancient island off Scotland. Very pragmatic people who think throwing 80lb rocks makes you a dummas.

Hmm, engine blocks.  I'm thinking of a kind of Basque stone lifting thing there...

Yeah, I have been trying to find some on the cheap for a farmer's walk apparatus, but so far no luck.  They only weight about 150lb each, so would have to fill them with sand or lead to get them up to the right weight.

Plan this year is Highland games on Saturday, Strongman on Sunday.  Stay tuned on more info.
