Last weekend, while loading up the bar for some squats, I noticed my
(free) 1980's vintage DP-sears weight bench/squat rack was rocking
gently back and forth
. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably cheap home weight bench or at least advice on things to look for or watch out for? The only bench I have really looked at so far is a Chinese made one from 'The Sports Authority' on sale for ~$140 at Sportmart. It is just a bench with squat rack, but they claim its rated at 400 lbs. The rest at that store were all rated 250 lbs, which seems pointless to buy. Thanks in advance. |

Steve, the best investment I've made concerning lifting is a power rack. The extra money is well worth being safe.I started out with some cheap equipment, but soon learned that it wasn't worth it after a few near misses squatting. Those department store benches/racks are fine for people who are just starting or toning up.Even a gym membership would be cheaper than a trip to the hospital.I bought my rack for $250 about 5 years ago. Those crossbars have saved my ass more than once.Sometimes I push a little too hard, but at least I can bail out from underneath without injury.

I bought a power rack from New York Barbell this winter and it was delivered 4 days after the order with no shipping charge. It is a fairly heavy duty rack as they have a number of racks to choose from and the price was excellent. Highly recommended.

Excellent site there Coach!!! Would you consider the majority of the equipment to be "commercial" grade? |

Thanks for the site Coach!
![]() Now that I'm thinking 'safety,' are the small safety brackets on a bench like that good enough, or is the larger cage-style bracket the way to go? (Tough to beat the price, though!) |
