I am relatively new to the Highland Heavy Athletics(only 4 games) and I'm trying to find some good lifts to help with my training. I do a lot of leg presses, power cleans, and deadlifts. Could you guys tell me if these are good lifts or recommend other lifts that I should try that might help me out. I appreciate any input. Thanks |

Well, there's your regular lifting and then there's the way top athletes like Werner Gunthor trained. We fit somewhere in between, and I'm definately on the bottom end. Get in touch with Coach Mac. He probably already has a good basic starting routine worked up. Also, tapes are a necessary part of training. I strongly recommend the VP Productions lifting tape, and you can also get a (somewhat superficial) feel for how throwers train from the Oldfield, Feuerbach, and Randy Barnes videos. Then, if you're lucky enough to find a copy of the old Gunthor training tape, you'll find out why some athletes are just plain born different from the rest of us. One thing to understand about throwers' training: you just can't describe it as simply lifting weights when you're not throwing. It's more like an all-out assault on your nervous system. |

"It's more like an all-out assault on your nervous system"........I like that....Mallard - you might scroll down to the sport specific post - has some good info. Drop the leg presses - accent balance and explosive speed- ie: snatches , plyometrics, cleans (we tend to do more hang cleans and snatches), fast deads ,close grip incline press ,pull throughs - nothing slow unless it's deep offseason. Oh yeah - throw all the time - in the beginning you will improve more by wearing out some implements - get some quality coaching and videos. Obsess . Repeat. Enjoy.

Mr. Baab is another elite athlete we're lucky to be able to share the sport with. One of natural types who's on the other end of the training spectrum from me. I just wish he'd throw me one of his sweaty towels like he's Tom Jones or something, and maybe some of that elite stink would get on me. I'll just use a little bit, then the rest I'll be happy to share with everyone via ebay.

Yea that Mike guy is old. Hope that does not happen to me. How can you attack his hair? I really was impressed with how it grew, just all over the place, like he had some to spare.

Sounds like good advice. I don't have any throwing implements, but I'm either going to make some, or I got an offer from an offer from Tyson Trias to train with him. I'll start including the hang cleans and snatches. Now with those lifts, should I stand with my knees slightly bent and lift fron there or should I bend them considereably and leave the weight about 3-4" off of the ground. Another question is that I would like you guys to tell me if my throws are any good. I'm 20 years old and have practiced twice and competed four times, my throws are as follows: WOB 12', HWFD mid 24', LWFD mid 46', Heavy hammer, upper 64', and I put Herman's Head(22lb stone) 25' 9.5". I know that these are nowhere near where they need to be, but are they good enough to where I can compete in B class and do decently? Thanks for the input guys. |

Matt,
You will do fine in the B's. With a little practice your numbers will jump quickly. I have seen you throw (as you know), and you have enough raw power already. Refining your workout in the gym will help. There is nothing like throwing to improve your throwing. Get out there and practice. Get down to Tyson's to practice with him, he is really good at teaching the events and picking your throws apart. |
