Hey-

I've made the commitment to the rotation with the open stone this year and I'm in my 7th week of spinning.

My PR with the glide is still greater than my PR with the spin, but I can tell from my practice throws that my new technique has the potential to increase my PR in the next competition. But I'm still having a hard time finding the proper foot placement for the power position while spinning. In short, I'm still blocking on my left side with my left foot coming down near the trig about 4-8 inches too far right to open up my hips the way that I could with the glide.

Any coaching tips on how to open up that darn pivot leg?  I'm gonna wear my new shoes out working on this footwork problem.

Keep doing it that way.  Don't change a thing.  I'm looking forward to seeing you at MWC.

Wayne-

Thanks, am looking forward to our trip out East. The Masters World Championships are the most exciting competitions of the year for me. The trip to Oregon and then Northern California last year was spectacular and I'm hoping for the same experience in NewHampshire and then NovaScotia.

Good luck in  your training,

Wayne-

By the way, This picture, or avatar ... whatever, over here on the left is my father and I on the field near the hammer cage at MWC Oregon last year. He was the judge for the group with big Don Stew and the other big guys and he also had a great time with the guys at MWC.

Good luck in your training,

I'm no expert on the spin, I glide myself, but the faster you try put the left down generally the more closed you will be, the slower you put the left leg down after you pivot on the right ball the more open you will be. You however want to get the left foot down fast, so just try make an effort to open up while still getting the left down fast.

Ya know you track & field people make my head spin....!!

My fiance lettered in shotput and discus in high school and college so needless to say she has me trying that damn spin...It is tough and I definitely tip my hat to those of you that can do it well..One thing that has really helped me is the finish on the Braemer Stone , she has gotten me to create a fluid motion starting at the foot that ends with the snap of the hip and release of the stone..It has added 10-15 feet to my throw...no records in jeopardy tho' I'm just averaging approximately 37 feet now with a best throw of 44 feet..Now if I could just get the darn caber down I might not completely embarass myself....!!

Will your dad come with you in September?  I'm sure Don could put him to work.  This looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.  Bill Crawford tells me he intends to get a lot of the Ams involved in running the games, so there should be lots of new friends all around.

Kevin, try kicking your left heel up toward your butt after sprinting from the back, this will cause a reflex and put the left foot down quicker and usually in the right place.   Also make sure your right foot is pre-turned when it lands after the sprint, and re-torque your left side.  This will get your hips around faster and create maximum torque.

Kevin,

As you would expect- Sean gave you great advice.  You could also accomplish the same thing by keeping your knees close together in the middle.  The first sweep should be knees apart and then knees together.  Kicking your butt with knees together will make the lower body much quicker around the upper body- giving you the torque you're not feeling yet.

Good luck.  See you in Chicago?

Satch

Sean,

do you actually mean lifting the lower leg at the knee just before landing the power position? I know that whatever you suggest for the stone, I need to do... Please, can you explain this more?

Hey-

Thanks Sean, I'll be anxious to try these suggestions.

Wayne- The ol'Man is a bagpiper and I think he's got another gig that weekend, (cause he's got pipe'n gigs every weekend) but I'm sure he'd drop it if he could dance into another MWC judging job.

Larry- We won't make it to Chicago this year due to a trip to Florida to visit family on that weekend. Will you travel to the Masters Gathering in NewHampshire? Tell Kevin Neis that I hope to see him at the ChicagoCelticFest.

Good luck in your training,

-Kevin

Just started the spin myself.  The thing that has really helped me is concentrating on twisting my right foot into the ground.  Really feel them hips.  Also, Chad Braden says to really slam that left foot into the ground.  All this is from a right handed perspective.

Kevin - check out your angle to trig and where stone lands- Ryan Goddam Vierra told me to go from back right corner to front left - and the stone should land just off to left if done right - all in a straight line . Helps keep hips open - I try to replace my left foot with my right as I reverse - if it's all straight and I remember to use the left arm for SNAP - it's usually a good toss. The key would be lots of drills to grooove in the hip torque - Ryan calls it "hitching up on a stool" - and checking feet position for consistency. Good luck.

Will, what I'm talking about is as you sprint toward the trig think about pre-turning your right foot and kicking your left heel up toward your butt while during the sprint phase.  Look at some video pics off of The Ring, Mac's video's. Watch the Shot and Discus clips. Some throwers exaggerate this more than others.

Watch John Godina, and Christian Cantwell, throw the shot.  You'll notice the left leg action.  I first learned this from watching a clinic by Art Venegas, the UCLA throwing coach at the time.
