I had an idea for adding some instability to the kettlebell, so it's more like a WFD. If I took one of my 16kg (~35 lbs) KB and wrapped a thin-linked chain around the handle and attached a shovel handle to it with about two inches of links between the KB and shovel handle, that would, I think, give me an approximation of a WFD implement (until I save up for a real one).
At least I think it would. Any thoughts on this?

You have to be careful with a shovel handle as it's originally not meant for that type of torque. If it blows apart you could be looking at a possible injury. A piece of steel would be much better. (Mind you I don't know what your shovel handle looks like). However if it works, You go girl! haha
I've used some pretty nasty looking frankenstein weights in the past and they all seem to work fine. As long as it meets the requirements for the implements you're golden! Don't wanna give yourself any false hope by having a weight that is too long.

you can buy a 28# wfd for approx $75 and a 56# wfd for approx $110 from Mike Landrich. Look up Landrich Power Systems, he's out of New York. Much safer than piecing together what you're talking about.

I'd use the kb as is before I'd monkey with it that much. Or use rope to prevent handle blowout or the smashing it'll take on impact.
Or, if you can get a decently welded d-handle, you can melt lead in a thick, wide tin can to the level you require for weights and monster up your own practice weights with the chain embedded in the lead. |

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it.
Some good ideas here...just have to find some way to get my throws improving other than practicing at the games. Hey, where do you live Mike? I read on a strongman site "in NY but on the PA border." Are you anywhere near Binghamton? I live in Cobleskill, so just over an hour away.

Sorry for the bad picture, but I went to home depot and bought an I bold and use some old weights to make my WFD and WFH throwing weights. I bought the handle at Acadamy or you could get one at any sporting goods store. I have since upgraded the hammer with 3/4" PVC pipe and glued an endcap (PVC) to the end. Again use old weights. If I break the hammer it only costs me $1.50 to get a new pipe. Old non-olympic bar weights can be found for next to nothing.

Just for comparison, here is what I have:
28# glued and bolted / 56# bolted and welded / LH welded / HH glued ![]() You can get ring handles from Iron Mind here: http://www.ironmind-store.com/R-Ring-Handle/productinfo/1258/ I have had good luck with these and I can fix them myself if I need to. Tom |

Nice Sheaf bag. I made one out of a mech laundry bag stuffed with artifical rubber multch from, you got it, Home depot and then stuffed in a burlap bag. The end is secured with a metal hose clamp for an auto parts store. The shape sucks but i am still practicing with a 16 pound bag. I really wish i could find a 24 or 28 lb stone. I have 17, 20, and 34. The 34 doesn't get much use.

Man, I have 3 kids that are a money drain. My oldest start UT this fall whcih is costing me. I have to count my pennies and find cheap ways to do things. I competed in San Antoinio last weekend and had to bring my own bologna sandwiches and beer. : )

Tom, I just bought a 6" R-Ring from Ironmind. I was using a D-ring but it didn't feel right. Thanks for the link. --Jim

Right on. I think you'll like it.
I am about to order a set of WFD from Mike Landrich (fourth post above) for myself. Just have to do the numbers first. My hammers are working okay, so I'll keep going with those. Tom |

I just emailed a local welder to get a price on making me a 28 lb weight (actually 25.5 lbs as the O-Ring I bought from Ironmind is 2lbs and my chain is .5 lbs). I'll let you guys and gals know the results. My homemade hammer works great. I JB welded the plates together so there isn't a shifting during the throw. I made my sheaf out of a burplap sack with a laundry bag interliner filled with rubber multch from Home depot. The shape isn't nice and rectangular but it weights 16 lbs and works just fine. My fork is from a local harware store. I used a dremel tool to cut the middle tine off and also sanded it tines smooth. I am making my implements on the cheap. They work jsut fine.
