I'm really frustrated! I pulled my calf a little more than 6 weeks ago playing racquetball of all things. Well it seemed to heal up okay so I threw at Cumberland Gap and then Bethabara with no problems...from my calf that is. Well, after talking to Chris "Monster" Chafin at Bethabara, I decided to incorporate some wind sprints into my workout the following Monday. On the second set, pow! there goes my calf again; I could barely walk. Since then it's just not healing. Every time I put some pressure on it I hurt it again. I'm getting really frustrated and desperate, I've missed two games because of this stupid injury and I need some help. There's about 3 weeks to the Grandfather games. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. |

Yeah Lem, First, don't play raquetball and try to be a heavy. Second, don't do wind sprints and try to be a heavy. One more thing... don't even think about skiing. ~Jason |

LEM -have you been to a good sports injury guy? Don't want to alarm you - but a long-term recurring injury needs to be looked at by a pro. Stretch gently all the time - don't make it sore - just a gentle stretch - take 3 days off and do nothing but ice it relentlessly (3-4 times a day for 30 minutes) along with the gentle stretching. Then on the fourth day - E-A-S-E - into tossing movements w/ only bodyweight to get an idea of how it feels .Warm up on a bike or easy walk- DO NOT RUN - TOSSING MOVEMENTS ONLY-NO WEIGHTS- EASY DOES IT. Proceed with caution - the idea is to get you to the game ready to toss THAT day - back off if not better. Immediately ice it 30 minutes again and later that night. Your reaction the next morning will give you a gauge of how ready you are to E-A-S-E into more stressful training ie: weights. Ice and stretch 'till game after all exercise.Good luck.

Thanks for all the responses. I've got ice on it as I type and I will be seeing a Chiropractor tomorrow and perhaps a sports medicine practioner later. But I will not give up my snow skiing...even if I am a heavy! Joggin' maybe; racquetball probably, but skiing never. God Bless and Throw Far! |

LEM - I play racqetball(off-season) and sprint every week(before every workout all year) - your body will let you know if it will work for you.

Sprinting should be a fundamental element in every heavy's training. However, if you haven't run wind sprints since HS football then you need to EASE into them over the course of MONTHS. I've seen lots of folks really hurt themselves when they start sprinting for the first time in 10+ years. Lots of factors working against you. The two biggest in my opinion are loss of flexibility and strength increases. Yup, 10 years of heavy lifting probably put slabs of muscle on those legs. Going full out in a sprint when you were in HS and could barely squat 225 wasn't nearly as dangerous as going full out now when you are squatting 5 bills plus. Once you get in sprinting shape then sprint regularly (Baab is dead on here). I have a sprint day every wednesday in season (sprints and agility work, nothing else), and will also sprint on a weekend if I don't have a games. |

Oh yeah I cannot sprint to often...no matter what I pull a leg muscle..pick a leg muscle and I have pulled it sprinting..I do however play frisbee on the weekends and believe or not never a problem with my legs..go figure..
