Skullsplitter asked me to post this up. It is a technique he has been working on, and was wondering if anyone has seen it before or had any comments.

I notice that it enables him to stay much further back and get a longer push on the stone. He has noticed a 1 to 2 foot improvement over his normal glide technique...

I might be missing the joke here, but that just looks like a shuffle?

Brock used to throw 50+ as an Am that way.  Some stones (Stone Mountain rock) are generally thrown with that tech due to their size.

It's the step back and shuffle progression for glide progression. All my first year thowers ( 6th grade) will use this tech this season, will progress next year to the full glide.

Pretty popular along with the side step and shuffle back in the 50's

Well, I will tell you that its not like a shuffle at all. More of a two-footed
glide. Because the take off is off both legs, the shoulders stay more parallel
to the trig, and you end up creating a little bit more separation, especially as
when you land, you are forced to reach back with your left leg.

The hard part of it will be to not "hop" up into the air on your initial thrust
back.

Didn't Randy Barnes throw that way?

Sorry Bill...not allowed to make fun of your weight anymore doesn't leave me many options.

Well, I guess in an indirect way that was a fat joke. I give you guys 2 more weeks and the gloves are off again.

Back to the topic, I wish I could throw like him but again I have struggled make the rotational technique work for me. As a glider the grass and conditions are a little less reliable to work with. This technique is my compromise.

I might try that, I can't spin and my glide looks worse.  What I'm trying to figure out is how much weight did you put on that left foot before turning.  (Sorry I don't know the technical terms).  Did you just sort of touch it or did you land then push off again?

Did a ton of them today.......

Was struggling to hit 40' with glide and hit 42' using this.

Thanks for sharing.

And your not fat...just big boned.

Great TRob, glad you are having success with that. And thanks for calling be big boned.

Andrew, put that left foot back accross to the right of the right foot, just as you would with the power position. As with any style, square your shoulders to the back of the trig.

Hey, Erik, I miss the fat jokes because if you aren't telling those then I feel bad about calling you Tattoo.

I've heard Erik referred to as Tattoo a few times now, just how short is he?

With my training crew, we got one guy we refer to as the gnome, hobbit, troll, quasimoto... We have to put down a 3" platform we built for him when we squat so he can reach the bar.

Hey...I'm the tallest man in my family!

All of 5'10", on a good day...and only 5'9" on a Doc Roc training day...can you say spinal compression?

Being short has an advantage though...I don't have to reach so far to tie my shoes, Bill...you remember being able to bend over and tie your shoes right?!

Erik

Go to a powerlifting meet. A few months ago we were at the APF Best of the Best in the Midwest Meet and I mention to my "short" training partner that he was one of the tallest guys there, at 5'8" - 5'9".

Erik, that's why I wear flip flops as much as possible and I don't untie my shoes so I can slip them off and on.

Eric looked a lot shorter when he didn't have a neck. And standing around Troupe would make anybody look small.

That looks like I might be able to do that and make it work too.

Bill, you're not fat...not in that video anyway.

But, I hope to get some improvement training with a lad who was one of the best shotputters in Oz as a junior - but this "technique" would be a start compared to the awful thing I do now.

Hi Lance, I guess that is the point. It can be a start or a technique to use when conditions aren't great or particularly if you are a powerful guy without alot of technique. Getting a consistent toss and setting a base for other techniques is always a good thing. I still glide but this is another tool in the box to use when I need to adapt to an awkward stone or slow conditions.

LOL.

Fairly powerful, with no technique - that's me.

Looks very similar to Adriane Blewitt and she's pretty decent.

It's a legitimate glide technique that a very powerful guy
threw 75 feet with, and a lot of east european shot putters
used it successfully

I say give the basic south african walkthrough a spin. Check http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKqwoRIgCLI - this out.

Did that today.  Real nice when you catch one.  Might stick with it.  Next thing you know I will be spinning in the WOB....

If it works use it! Every shot put technique is an attempt at the same thing...getting into a solid power position with a little speed and keeping that separation.  This technique does that for you, so use it.

As a coach of inexperienced throwers I often have trouble convincing them that they can throw furhter with a glide. When they do a standing throw everything is where it is supposed to be and often they don't hit the same position with a glide and therefore only want to stand of shuffle...those are short term gains.

I might use this technique in my coaching and if i ever get my fat ass out to throw again. At the very least it is a great drill to feel the legs and separation in the throw.

Still alive and with three kids now. I am living in CT again and once I can get my job and housing situation settled I might get back out on the field...no promises though.

I watched the Adrienne Blewitt clips. I knew someone had done this before.

Looking at the left foot turning as part of the initial movement forward with the South African technique is an important point. Nice clip.

I was a dyed-in-the-wool glider back in the day, wanted to be just like Timmerman (especially the smurf-blue tights). But I eventually realized it's a lot easier to get your hips around and into the throw with the full spin or south african.

I never thought about the left foot though. I guess that's why you're the doctor.

Yeah, but you've got every thing else figured out and that's why you are such a great thrower. But again, that left foot move did jump out at me.

Dave you were the Div.III Timmerman. No clue, what's so special about the left foot in that video. Just a step in drill, no.
