Okay guys, take it easy on me here. I have struggled with the wob for the
last couple of years, which is baffling to me. I watched Doug MacDonald's
instructional video about the wob and how he essentially swings the
weight back between his legs before the drop down to stand and throw.

Doug is essentially standing straight up, drops down and like a stretch
reflex stands with the weight. I know this sounds like all other sequences
but it is different in that when the weight comes back, if you could stop
the video Doug would be standing straight with the weight hanging
straight down from his crotch. The dip is quick from there, which looks a
lot like starting a hang clean from a standing position.

Anyway I tried this technique today and cleared my pr + 6 inches with the
42 lb weight several times in a row. It worked for me. Any other thoughts
about this thread? I wish I had a video to clip to this but that is the best I
can do to explain.

Interesting.  Went out and tried it, not sure if I was correct.  As the weight comes forward it's a quick hip pop forward to drive it?  I found that I was not getting as much back arch and not as far onto my toes.  Sound correct?  I will scan and see if I can locate some footage.

I have seen lots of Canadians use this technique - I assume because they
learned it from Doug. I never could get the timing down properly for it. I
remember in his video when he says "Why drop down with the weight, when
your trying to throw it high?" Makes sense to me.

Awesome that it is working for you.

I started doing this too. I finally hit 17 standing last year and did it in 5
different games. Zolk definitely does this. If your hips and quads are
already inthe stretched position then you miss the reflex opportunity. I
think Paul Ferency does this too.

DocRoc - it's cause you're strong as hell in deadlift and hips. It's a more natural position for u to put some hip lift on something. Notice a common thread in most those guy?  BIG hip power.
Don throws somewhere in the middle.

I want my head below the weight at the back and I can't dead for sh*t. Of course , Myles completely screws my theory - huge swing AND dead!

Paul swings so far back his hips and knees almost go straight and then he sits on it and bounces up. Best I ever saw at it.
Zolk is MUCH more the small swing upright lifter type.

Doug is throwing WOB at 7:53 in the above clip and if you freeze it you can get a good sense of how far back he is still reaching. What I notice is how fast his drop into the hole always was and it seemed like a good idea. Definitely some serious stretch reflex.

When I dead or Wob I use a ton of lower back and hammy.  The big thing for me is to get the impliment way back behind the legs in the stretch for the long stroke and then be patient while it starts to drop.  Then turn on the power to the caaaabooose and pull.  No hip dip or pop.  Just all lower back love.

Hi Will, Thanks for that clip. How about Matt with the 28 lb lwd WR? Anyway,
that clip of Doug does not show how is standing straight up before the
weight drops down.

Anyway, I think everyone gets the idea so if you can give it a try.

its true - it doesn't really show how much he started staying up right when he started clearing 17' standing.

I'd say check out Parman's WOB in the same video. Not as big a drop or a back swing, but tons of pop from the hips.

Dave and Will, thanks for the input as you guys have done and seen about
everything. Can you guys think of anyone else who is more along this style?
Sean appears to be in that category so a video clip would be great if there is
one from anyone.

This is Greg's video in France last year.  I cleared Wout's 16'7" games record their at that games.  Obviously not his best record.  It wasn't my best throw in the year, but I think it applies to the technique.  Its at about 1:51 in the video.  Huge crowd in France.

Thanks Sean. Keeping the arm long is also evident. That fits well with your
big hang cleans as well.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, heee, heee, heee, heee!

The funny thing is that none of you know that Paul was the one who encouraged me to use the spin.  Most likely b/c he could take watching me stand anymore.

I remember seeing Harvey doing the spin at Capital District and a top pro
thrower walked over and asked about what he was doing. Is that an accurate
story or am I a little clouded in my memory? I would like to think I saw
history in the making!

Byron Lemont started spinning in the 80's He was short in stature but very powerful. He went over 16' and was well into his 40's at the time.

Thank you Professor Titanium. I love that kind of information. Did anyone
else, say like Harvey, know Byron? Keep the wisdom coming Professor.

Yes ,Zeus competed a no. of times with Byron.I would think that's where he first saw the spin.

Bill,

That is exactly the way it went.  I tried it out immediately after that games and hit 16 my first practice.  There was no chance of me going back after that.  I crack up every time I go to Canada and tell them that one of their own taught me that move.

Harrison,

Wow, I did see history in the making! Thanks for confirming that bit of history. You should write an article for Milo. Even if someone had previously written an article about the spinning wob, you are the man who got it poplularized and set world records. Not to mention the fact we would want to get a bit on your training.

Sorry we can't expand on the methods that led to prodigious throwing in Easton, PA! I can however tell you that unheated garages and musty dark cellars in the early AM of Sat/Sun of the late fall and winter holds the key.....................oh, and just abit of electric shock therapy!
