Hi.
My name is Mike and I am a wannabe strength athlete and full-time trophy husband. I was a terrible baseball player in high school, a collegiate fencer and a strength and conditioning coach for University of Texas Fencing. In the past few years I have competed in powerlifting, strongman, and have now stumbled across highland games. I am 100% hooked on throwing. This is what I want to train for and compete in - everything else is just a diversion. I live in Austin, TX and my first games were at the Austin Celtic Festival in 2011. Mike Baab was gracious enough to introduce me to the sport, help me learn the events, and continues to be incredibly helpful and generally awesome.
I used to run a site called Now You Try that apparently got some play around here briefly. It consisted of video strength/speed/endurance competitions for prizes. Through that site I met the Vincent brothers and Jasen Von Guinness, and I'm sure they have regretted that every day since. I am now keeping a blog called http://throwbros.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow - Throw Bros. It's a video blog I maintain with Aaron George - another thrower who happens to be my childhood buddy.
I have been really blessed with the awesome people I have met in this sports (except for everyone that has ever beaten me in an event; they are not awesome). I have some lofty goals, especially for my age, but I think I have THE RIGHT STUFF. I HOPE TO SHOW YOU MY STUFF.
Stats:
Age: 34 (this will change approximately every 12 months) Height: 6'2" Weight: 220
2014 Goals: - 45 foot Open Stone - 35 foot HWFD - 70 foot LWFD - 110 foot LH - 80 foot HH - 14 foot WOB - Top 40 finish in NASGA amateur rankings.

thanks! i hope to get several posts in before im banned.
right now my primary objectives are to learn the throws
and get my weight back up to around 220. i had been
staying in striking distance of 198 for my last couple of
PL and strongman comps. enough of that shit - time to
eat.
11/15/11:
squats
215x5
245x5
275x5
i tore the meniscus in my right knee earlier this year. i
was recovered well enough to compete in a PL meet in
october, but it has taken a bite out of my squats. i have
to warm up for like an entire day before squatting now.
db split squats
25x10x3
prone leg curl
4x15
abs
med ball crunches and hanging leg raises until it sucked
a whole lot.
today:
15 wfd throws with 14#
20 wfd throws with 28#

warm-up:
band work, chins, jump rope
i hate the jump rope but baab has me drinking the kool-
aid on getting quicker feet
push press:
105x5
115X5
135x12
lat pulldown:
5x10
db tricep press (behind head)
60x15 - too easy, guess my triceps are happy
70x12x3
pinwheel curls
35x12, 10, 8
bb rear shrugs
185x20x3
supplements right now:
cheap-ass gainer powder from vitamin shoppe
creatine
metamucil (shitting great is what fitness is all about)
fish oil caps
and i stuck a tap in my cranberry blonde ale:
its still a little flat and thin-tasting. hopefully just
needs more time to condition in the keg.

Deadlift
Warm up 135x10x2
285x5
325x5
365x5
Felt a little stiff-legged from squats earlier this week, but good overall.
Bar was moving quickly enough.
High Pulls
135x5x5
Felt a little uncomfortable with these. Honestly can't remember the last
time I ever did them. Started clicking by the last set, which was the one
I filmed.
Threw my new 22 lb. stone a little. The handle is a little strange, and
the wrist wrap exacerbates that problem. I had decent tosses with a
couple of different hand positions though.

whatevs, you never get enough credit for what is probably a load of boring behind the scenes stuff...... so we can all frolic thru the joy that is Nasga. Even though I've noticed you like giving folks funny monikers in their avs.
keep it up Beech, best advice I can offer at this point of your throwing is to learn stuff the right way the first time thru. No reason in half assing it or having to re-learn things when you've obv. got some great talent and direction right in your own neighborhood.
ohh....and I just edited my post, once you've proven to the gods of nasga you're not a db, they'll turn your edit button on.

yesterday, i threw about 30 times with my brother who was visiting from
dallas. mix of braemar, open stone and lwfd. pretty fun.
he is a former big league starting pitcher and now coaches teens and
kids, so it was good to get his input on some of the rotational power
aspects of the throws.
i should probably lift some weights soon.

Working out is just an excuse to use caffeine.
Push Press
Didn't really warm up properly, just did 3 sets at 65 lb.
115x3
135x3
155x11
205x2 - Just for fun
I messed around a little trying to figure out where I sit
in terms of push press strength. 205 was a little tough
after the work sets, but still easy enough.
1-arm DB press
45x10x5
Chins (multiple grips) Superset with Cable Curl
5x5 / 5x12
Weighted Dips
25x10, 10, 8, 6
BWx10
Worked on open stone footwork. MAT$O had a
http://bit.ly/rMppCm - really great blog post
where he broke down specific positions in the spin, and I
spent about 30 minutes working on hitting those at
progressively faster speeds.

couple things..
line drill:
doing this and staying in a line is great. This means
your low and high points of the weights orbit are where
you want them. Also it is go that you are quick in the
air and long on the ground. Now next time start trying
to use the feet to generate the speed instead of the
upper body. When the weight is at the low point drive
the right leg hard toward the direction you want to go.
THis is the same for LWFD.
We will get plenty of time to work on this at
Tossapolooza. if you dont come consider it failure.
WOB:
For me I start much slower. Speed in the swing is only
momentum that you will have to stop change direction this
slows the pull. The bottom of your throw is good however
think of coming in high and when the weight reaches the
high point in the back(between the legs) then sink and
wait for it to hit the bottom and stand up. It will
create a sling effect.

so after a 10 week strength phase with matso's
programming, here's the breakdown:
Squat 365 => 335x4 (estimated 1RM of 388). Also hit 375x1 on 12/27/11.
Bench 255 => 235x5 (estimated 1RM of 270). Hit 260 on 12/27/11.
Push Press 205 => 205x4 (estimated 1RM of 229). Hit 225 on 12/30/11.
Deadlift 480 => 450x3 (estimated 1RM of 508). Hit 500 on on 12/30/11.
Power Clean 225 => 245
Snatch 135 => 145
olympic lifts werent really emphasized as much because i was working on speed with them. still saw gains all around. next phase the plan is to work on speed and power as well as sharpening up my throws. pretty stoked about the way things are going.

thanks fellas, im pretty happy.
so this last weekend was TOSSAPALOOZA 2012 and it was pretty darn awesome. cant thank the vincent brothers enough for volunteering their time and andy letting me crash on his futon. zach was awesome for letting us get burger crumbs and beer all over the Warehouse Gym's floor too.
saturday we took a ton of throws. while i wasn't particularly happy with the way i threw, i learned a ton from everyone. matt gave me some drills that will be in the rotation now. right hip is still thanking me for all the reps. also i decided (after several beers) learn to load some stones. andy introduced me to spider tacky and got my skinny ass lifting stones i had never even attempted before. that...is an event you feel the next day.
all said, i got to spend some quality time over the weekend with genuinely good people AND i have never felt so much pressure to eat big in my life. everyone will be happy to know i weighed in at 215 on sunday night.

yesterday was a deload push press and deadlift day. nothing exciting.
today i took about 40 reps with the 16# shot. focused on:
- slowing everything down and hitting positions
- "more drive, less jump" as matso put it perfectly
things that helped today:
- finding spots to look at that kept me in position
- around 2:00 i widened my starting stance and it seemed to help keep me low and smooth
things that sucked:
- not blocking well
- end up spinning away from trig at release, instead of exploding toward the sector

the competitive itch has been overwhelming lately. with the north texas kickoff games still being 2 weeks away, today i registered for a fencing tournament here in austin on sunday. amazingly, almost all my gear was working and good to go. im sure im going to get my ass handed to me, but whatever. i need to compete.

much better result from the fencing tournament than i was expecting. made it to the finals but lost. i can trace the loss to one issue in particular: that guy was better than me. either way, i can definitely live with a silver medal after a 3 year layoff and no practice.
i felt plenty quick and explosive. when i told my body to move, it moved and i covered ground quickly. not accurate at all, but i made up for it with experience most times. the biggest problem i ran into was running out of gas in the finals and ending up with frozen feet. i didnt eat enough at the break for one thing, and i simply havent been training for the level of conditioning required.
back it today. first day of speed phase.

i had what i would call a successful day at the north texas kickoff games yesterday. took 1st place in amateur B with:
stones - 36'-4.5"/30'-2" (got 36'-7" on an extra attempt)
weights - 27'-6"/56'-5.5"
hammers - 64'-5.5"/85'-6.5"
sheaf - 24'
weight for height - 11'
caber - fart
notes:
- hammers need work, no surprise. didnt have a way to practice them until last week
- WFH is abysmal. gotta get hips involved.
- need to turn up the speed in caber and be smarter. mental errors got me this time.
thats a PR in every event (except caber - that was a fart). had a blast and got an epic sunburn. big thanks to matt and andy for the badass clinic, spencer for getting my weights in order, and DMC along with the north texas heavies crew for giving the throwers a great event. gonna be a great year. time to get my ass handed to me in the A's.

throwing today
what i see:
hammers - still too new to this movement to judge myself too harshly. hips arent moving, too much arm in the throws, orbit doesnt flatten out and falls left as speed increases.
lwfd - happy with this, really working on the sprint. need to finish with more upward explosion and keep my chest and head high.
stone block - breaking the whole thing back down to basics. my set up looks awful now, so i need to get back to getting low and firing up instead of swinging up with my arm. working on finishing with my chest open and out to the sector instead of hunched over. i am also jumping upward when i reverse instead of letting momentum bring my rear foot forward. observe:

hammers:
the whole throw like we talked about is drifting to the left side. Look at Vierra videos and look at how much the hammer is over the right side. The further back you can catch with that right hand the better it will be.
wfd:
you are sinking in the back but not starting to drive to the trig with the legs. You are getting there but you are not accelerating it out of the back with the lower body.

Mike, your stance seems awfully wide for hammer, harder to get the knee drive in if they are splayed out like that. From a shorties POV, closer is better, allows more lean and drive.

good point
throwing today:
stones - still working on stands for the most part. stopped being so stiff on the set up and it seems to help with speed and drive from the right side. for spins, spencer told me to drive off my left and hooooly crap did i get faster. the first time i got it right, i got to the front so fast i didnt finish at all because i wasnt ready.
hwfd - eh. wasnt really there today
lwfd - same deal sort of. pushing forward from the back and gained a ton more speed but couldnt finish.

threw at dublin st patricks day festival on saturday. great little games, but it was clear i would be 2nd place at best with spencer there. a lot of fun, some good throws. i think my day was mediocre overall, but i had one big PR so thats a win.
braemar - 29'-1" big fat 24lb stone
ostone - 38'-1" almost a 2' PR
hwfd - 26'-9"
lwfd - 55'-4.5"
22 hammer - 59'-4" bleh bah fart. as a fun side note, i accidentally threw the 16 for my third throw and got it 82'.
WOB - 10' spencer wasnt coming in until 12, and i didnt want to hold up everyone so i could tie my previous PR. we skipped straight to 12 and i did my classic "throw it high enough but not over the bar" routine.
caber - 55 degrees. decently tough stick, but i just need reps on this event.
2nd place in open.

im trying to break everything down to absolute basics, but its frustrating to go out and suck.

interesting throw day
ostone:
stands to 37' - thats a foot or so off of my spin. i figured out how to actually get my hips moving a little instead of just pushing up and shoving the stone out.
spin to 37' - only a couple got that far, but they still weren't pretty. i am getting good speed out of the back, but my finish is just awful. if i fix that, im well over 40', i can feel it.
may i present, "what is wrong with my ostone spin in 3 pictures (all from separate throws)":
1.
open as wide as can be. all separation is lost and hips are already open. compare this to our friend matt vincent dot net:
2.
i think ive finally figured out that my weird head position, that you can see clearly here, is due to me trying to crank it out after ive lost all momentum. so many things wrong here i cant even describe. again, compare:
3.
i leave my feet because there is literally nothing behind the throw any more, and i am trying to shove it into the sector.
if i can transfer what i figured out today on my stands to the end of my spin, im going to drop some bombs. until then i will suck.
also threw LWFD. pretty sure i hit a PR but too lazy to measure.

You pretty much nailed it. You have to be more patient with the upper body. This is your biggest problem. This may be something that can be fixed out of the back of the ring but you did not post that part.
If you are 37' standing. Then ideally what you want to do is use the Full throw to get yourself into the standing position with more momentum. If you think about the full throw more as a rolling start to a stand that may do you better.
From last time I saw you throw you were hopping a lot during the throw thing more about steping into the middle and keeping that right foot turning.

spencer taught me middle drills which is reducing the "hop," but its still an issue about 50% of the time. if i stay on my left too long, i get vertical.
a few practices ago i finally figured out how to actually get off the left faster and push off to get more speed. this is good, but i think it exacerbated my problems at the front. you said "use the full throw to get yourself into the standing position..." is there a drill or cue i can use to get myself there?
side note: my right knee is getting murdered from spins and i suspect my technique is to blame.

Just guessing without seeing video, but you're probably not turning your right foot. If the foot stays planted for too long, either in the middle or the finish, it puts a lot of torque on the right knee.

andy - you are right and it is footwear-related. cross-trainers arent rotating on asphalt. ordered some throwing shoes.
in-season strength 1.1
i made the judgment call to re-boot this strength phase completely. i started a new job and it demanded so much time that i was only able to lift a couple of times in the past two weeks. got back at it last night.
squats
45x5x3
135x5x2
225x5
255x5
295x5x3
bench
135x5

235x5x3 PR of some kind here
good mornings

still not being diligent enough on accessory work. spencer is just too charismatic and i cant stop listening to his golden voice.
