I was reading on AGM's hsitory section of the games about the 56 for distance.  The old distances were alot shorter than the modern throws of over 40' BUT, the world record for the "standing throw" was over 27'! The only person who immediately comes to mind with this swinging power is Dave Brown. Or am I totally off track and this is much easier than I think? Hold on, I'm gonna go try for myself...

Wisconsin last year, i believe Parman went 29' irish fling style.  Standing, feet planted, swing between legs, throw forward.

I think you should try it at Richmond.  That's really the only way to prove you've got some power in that gut!!!

I'm not sure where you found that record number, but it's mentioned in this description (linked on AGM's site):

http://www.aafla.org/SportsLibrary/Outing/Volume_21/outXXI 01/outXXI01j.pdf

This document describes the various techniques that were used with the 56.  It sounds like the standing throw was done with 2 hands, in a Scottish hammer style of motion.

I couldn't access that document, I was wanting to read it, any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?  In KC we have an old style 56 and we played with that standing Irish throw, pure power!  I recall Al Myers hitting mid 20's, but can't recall exactly what he hit.

Oops, I see what happened.  For some reason, a space appeared in the URL (between outXXI and 01).  Ditch the space and you should get there.  There's all kinds of interesting tidbits in there.

so...why are so many people doing this in competition?

in competition?  The livermore games was a warmup adjacent to the trig - the games field was rodeo track and not very prone to spinning - so (and I believe most the pro's attempted) we warmed up with a standing - then I threw the first two comp throws with a single turn (mainly from being nervous about an ankle injury the year before).

The only other area I've seen this done is in training, just to mix things up... my personal PR in training is around 34 feet from a stand... which nears my standing 16# open stone

Young Will....because they CAN     This is just part
of breaking down the throw and it develops
SPECIFIC STRENGTH....try (build up to this) winding
a pvc hammer with progressively heavier weight...we
have had up to 80 + pounds and talk about "circular"
strength...I've seen pic's of Indian Clubs weighing
over 100-lbs. I'm thinking of sending one to Mike
Smith for Xmas...now where did I put that checkbook

Hey Craig,

Was the throw that Parman did with one hand or two??

I am seeing a difference in styles with what is being discussed.  The one James Parman did was called the Irish Fling.  That is done with your toes on a line facing your direction of throw.  You may not have any approach or go beyond that line.  You take one hand only and get as many swings between your legs as you want.  You may not swing outside your legs.  You then release the weight forward from between your legs while you have to stay planted on the ground behind the line.  The measurement is made from the line to the mark the wt made in the ground.  We contest this event as a challenge event at the Wisconsin Games.  I think James went around 28' last year.  Darius Slovic won this year at around 27'.  I have done around 25'.  It is pure power and levers.

The one Dave Brown did is one turn of the two turn approach in the actual highland games throw for distance.  It would look like the spinning weight for height but done for distance rather than height.  That is the difference between the two styles I am reading on these posts.

At least I think I am correct on the Dave Brown was talking about.  Maybe I am wrong.

I was at West Coast Dave's house a few years back when he cracked off a one-spin 30 footer with the 56 while eating a carrot (which he was holding in his other hand at the time of the throw) and talking through the whole throw. Freaky Retard Strength Rules!!!!
