And I may get killed for this one, BUT, what is with the kilts that are made for the female athletes? I mean, aren't they a little short for you guys? I would think that the uniform should be the same for ALL athletes regardless of gender. My gal will be competing for the fist time on the 13th. When she got her kilt in the mail, oh lordy! She put it on and said that she looked slutty. I said, "I know. I like it Keep it on." But I did have to acknowledge her point. I mean, I don't think the spectators would be able to hold down their lunches if they were to see any more of my legs than are already exposed. Imagine if I were dressed like a Catholic school girl.
Is there any one who has found this? Does anyone have any pull with the apparel powers-that-be? Just in the interest of equity.

If I had any pull with the powers that be then the women's kilts would be shorter still. Can you say "muff cover"?

Oh my!
Well, if your lady was measured for her kilt with the understanding that it needed to be alittle longer, that would have been great. There arent really any special kilts for women as far as sports kilts that I know of. Mine is made short because my mentors, Lady Ventress and Lady Rathbun, highly suggested it be made shorter because it was less material to have to hike for WOB. My kilt was made by a kilt maker here in Tulsa. Ladies Kilts, (not sports kilts) are made to the length of mid-calf and not practical for throwing.
You may have to send it back and have it re-made if it wasnt measured correctly from the hip to the knee.
You wont get killed Josh, you are just stating your thoughts and asking a question!

silly man. you should have said:
"I know. I like it. Take it off."
I was afraid of how short the women's Sportkilts were--even with shorts underneath, so I ordered myself a men's and then took in the waist a few inches and sewed down the top few inches of pleat to look a bit more traditional. (she throws! she sews!)
I love the look of a traditional kilt, but like how light the Sportkilts are...

Back to the original subject, yeah, I think the kilts ordered from SportKilt are a little short, so I got two extra inches on mine... And their shirts are DANG small! I ordered my kilt in January, and they had free shirts with women's kilts, so I got an XL. It's more like a medium, so I don't wear it... Except at home...
Anyway, the SportKilts might be fine for short women, but for those of us who are tall, it doesn't work so well! I like my kilt to be slightly below mid-thigh so there's not so much extra fabric, but any shorter than that is a little obscene for me...

Wise words Carlos. IMHO, This is what makes a marriage last.
Josh, there are no hard and fast rules for length on a ladies' kilts. Like Cherie said, traditional ladies' kilts were actually "kilted skirts". Typically Tea length (below the knee), but I have seen some that were floor length. Obviously these are not conducive to athletic pursuits. I am curious where your gal purchased her kilt from. The kilt dealers I frequent (Neokilt and Sportkilt) offer both "standard kilts" and "mini kilts" for ladies. And most traditional kilt vendors who offer custom made kilts (Geoffrey Tailor for example) leave it to you to decide the length of your kilt (for ladies). It is unfortunate that your gal did not like the length of her kilt at first, but I'm sure once she gets some compliments about how she looks it it, she'll begin to love it.
In the Interest of Equity I say this. Woman have the power and intelligence to choose what length of kilt works for them. Ladies who have it can choose to flaunt it. Men should adhere to the traditional "to the break of the knee" length. I think the majority of athletes and spectators alike are happy and satisfied with this situation.
And frankly anything that does not hang below the kilt, does not interest me.

She got hers a sport kilt. Really well made. My gal's 6"1' so that may have something to do with the extreme shotness. I was just kinda wondering where the demand for shorter kilts was coming from.

I'm nearly six feet tall, so I'll bet that's why it seems so short... 18 inches of fabric just isn't much on a tall person!

I'm only 5'7" on a good day and 18" was too short for me and these old legs...sportkilt even has a "mini" version that is even shorter--14"...I think it might actually be demand from the goth community?...school-girl punk look is popular, I guess...

Women's kilts are way to short especially since most women ordering them aren't size 2s. Height really doesn't matter at all, I'm 5'4" and my kilt is way to short, just look at any pictures from shammies and its a nuisance to make sure its pulled down all day.

Hey Kori! good to hear from you!
About the only way to fix the problem of the length of the kilt is to make sure that when you get measured that you add a bit. The Sports kilt guys and Utlity kilt guys if they are at a games, they measure you on the spot and just tell the what you are needing it for. I know that there are vendors out there who have kilts and can order kilts for you and they also measure you there. I still have the same kilt I started with in hmmmmmmmm I think '98 or '99. I dont wear it to all Scottish functions though because it is too short for those types of events. I want to order a floor length, (hostess kilted skirt) just for Scottish gatherings and such.
But ya know, considering the styles that I have seen we fit right in.
You know, (sorry but what I am going to say might offend somebody, please dont send me bad emails!)
I look at things this way: 1) after having two kids, all modesty just flew right out the window...
2) if you guys havent already seen what a gal looks like, you need to get out more.( had to stop and think about how to word that one!)
3) if it what I have bothers you, dont look!
Now with that said you guys and gals have a great day! See ya'll in Wakeeney this weekend! Cherie

I'm reasonably certain that the problem of females ordering male kilts is in the way it's being measured and the relative anatomic differences between the male & female pelvis. The distance between a man's hip and his waist is far shorter than that of a woman. Measuring the girls the way we measure ourselves is flawed because it doesn't account for the female waist being so much higher than the male, hence a "shorter" kilt.
Josh, if Margaret wants a more properly fitted kilt on the cheap, I'd be happy to sew one up for her. I'm getting pretty good, if I could just figure out how to do darts properly. Just bring me a pattern she likes, but don't ask me how much. I really suck at figuring out quantity needed.
And allow me to offer a pre-emptive "shut yer hole", Jason.

I don't see what the big deal is about women needing to have a "women's
kilt". The way I see it.. a kilt is a kilt. some are shorter some are longer.
It's just a matter of preference for how much leg you wanna show.
Personally, the "women's kilt" available at SportKilt looked way too short
for my tastes, so I just ordered the "men's". (shrug) To each her own.

Posted By: nbafo

Deb the problem I had with the men's sportkilt is that there is 11" difference in my waist to hip measurement--I had to get the L to fit my ample posterior , but had to take inches out of the waist (even with the elastic it was gapping). I found sewing down the pleats helped, too.
weasel king--if you ease the pleats you can get a more shapely kilt for curvy women. you can dart the apron for about half of the waist/hip measurement you need to take up. pleat the material and pin as you normally would, then go back and slightly slide the top of each pleat over until you've taken up the difference
here's a website on how to sew a kilt--it's for dance, but it has pictures!

Thx, nbafo. I've been the sewing the pleats in before fitting, and then taking up the slack from the apron. I'll give this other approach a try.
