If you're not addressing a specific weakness, does it ever make sense to do drills rather than practicing the specific event?  P.S., yes Kirk, my last email followed one bad day and several good beers.

dflan- you bet - after some conversations w/ Ryan Goddam Vierra and Don Hollywood Stewart I realized drills are a must - all by themselves as a workout or before throwing to groove techique - try to do 10 turn drills in a row along a line holding a tire and stay either on the line or on your feet! Always drill....

Mike I am trying to put together a training program for the new year and wanted to incorporate drills, do you have any more you could share? I have the Polish Prince doing the Gunderson drill. The more the better. This invitation for effective drills goes out to everyone.

Beaux- #1 is a spin drill - just like you're doing a single turn wt4distance- cast weight(I use a tire 4 this) up and in front and spin underneath the weight so you can pull all the way around w/ whole body and give it a lift at end. Focus on making your upper and lower body 2 seperate parts- real whip is created when the lower body /hips SNAP  the upper body around. You'll know when it happens- drills are to muscle memory this movement so you can get in the trig and go for it NO thinking.Same movements work for open stone spinners.Try to work up to several spins w/out release , then go jack a few.I love 'em........and it's easier on your body- makes you faster.

If you're a glider, there was an excellent drill in the most recent Long & Strong:  you assume the power position (the start position for the Braemar), and have a partner maintain your throwing hand in position.  You concentrate on snapping the hips around without moving the ball.  I've tried this alone (just concentrating on keeping the ball stationary), and feel a very strong hip snap effect (which is totally lacking in my competition throws).

I'd like to figure out a good way to do this alone.  Maybe hold a rope that has one end secured to the ground...

spent the whole throwing session drilling today ,since we are so far away from the game season.

Drill till your legs are weak and then drill somemore.

get some medical tubbing. Rap as many times as you need to get the resistance as you need . Tie it to the bottom of a goal post or what ever. Maybe your trailer hitch. You can make a handle if you need or start with some rags and  duck tape to make a handle or a ball or  other. Your set. You could also try the PTs stretch bands  or maybe bungys or the other tie down straps. Used this twenty years ago for discus and shot

One note about using resistance to stop the upper body in the putting of stones.

This drill is fine at first to REMIND your upper body to stay back and allow your hips to rotate ahead. But the upper body needs to remain relaxed until the hips have rotated and you have created torque through the midsection. Training the movement with resistance may create the opposite effect.

PS. The band or rope should be held in your non throwing hand.

Stay back, rotate hips, left with the legs, and finish with the upper body.
