This has never impacted me until now.  I will be competing this Spring where there will be a womens, Am A's, and Masters.  What is the minimum number of competitors per class?  2 or 3?

As an AD, I take the stand that you "Run what was brung!"  You make available the classes that were advertised.  If I schedule a class, I run it with however few show up but I require that a competitor has to actually beat someone to earn a medal in an event.  I don't award "runner-up" unless there are at least three in the class and there can be no "champion" if there's only one competitor.  I also give those competitors the choice to step up a class.  Luckily, I'm seldom faced with that problem any more!!!

Thanks to all!  Wally, coming from the AD seat this is very important as it does establish precedence.  I appreciate it!

At the Masters World Championship each year, we don't contest a class (age group in our case) unless there are at least 3 competitors.

Correction:  I should have said "usually" we must have at least 3.  Apparently, in some past years some age groups were contested with only 2 competitors.

i think that 3, 6, 8 and 0 are "

4 would have to be what I would call an extremely angular figure!!!!!

Sorry Jeremy, I didn't mean to offend.  I will admit I like the lower quantity answer better though.

Do you think you will be heading for Ohio for either the Beltane game in May or the Brigadoon game in July?

Ok... Lets turn this question around. How many athletes are too many to have in an event? I think 8 is a good number, this means if you have Am-a, Am-b, pro, master and women you would have 40 athletes. That is what I am doing.

If I get more then 8 pro's, I am not sure what I will do. Maybe mix Am-A's and pro's together in a group?

"How many are too many?" depends on how many events will be contested and how many classes (or flights of classes) can be run at the same time!  Not much help, huh?  I don't recommend classes with more than 12 competitors.  If you run a group of 12, you can expect to average 45 minutes for each Distance event and 90 minutes for Height events and the Caber Toss (assuming a qualifying and a challenge caber.) So, 4 Distance, 2 Height, and the Caber Toss should fill up your day.

If one has the space and the judges available, any number of entrants can be dealt with at a Games!!!

At Enumclaw, even tho' restricted to a small field, thru' creative scheduling we are able to run 3 groups of 12 competitors, off 2 trigs and 2 uprights, doing 7 events, all starting at 8:45 in the morning and finishing at 5:00 in the afternoon with a lunch break in the middle.  In '06, we had 23 or so entrants in Novice Men's class.  Instead of turning half of them away, we divided them into 2 flights, scored each flight separately, awarded medals to each flight, and then lumped all the scores together to determine the over-all champion and runner-up.  We also get small classes, as in Master Men and the Women's classes.  We simply group them together in flights of 12 or less.

You're limited only by the space available, the number of judges that your budget can handle, and your imagination!!!!

My goal is three trigs and two uprights. Although, the third trig IS going to be a challenge. The big complaint last year was lack of time to see anything else.

I am running 6 events, plus the farmers walk challenge. I have 5 divisions, but I may be able to combine a couple of groups, depending on numbers.

Not much help, huh?

Much help. Thank you.

Judges, judges, judges... I consider this to be the success to smooth flow and timley events. I have been lining up officials since I took on the role of AD.

Very nice. We grouped masters, am-a and pro last year, but I have nearly 8 pro's already signed up, so I am not sure I can do that this year.

I am holding training this summer fo judges, so I can use volunteers but still get accurate and professional officials and scoring. I hope to spend every last penny I have on prize money.

Thanks again!

Here is a discussion we had last year about this topic:

Edit: OK I cant figure out how to point to another topic.

anyhow, just look in the AD section, and select all the posts...

Dan Wood started it with title "How many athletes in a flight that went ok..."

Excellent point, Hapy!  Folks can also use "search" to look up any topic that strikes their fancy.  Sometimes, tho', they might just want some discussion of their own case in particular.
