Subject: Who uses what?

Was reading the stength post in the General section and the topic of performance enhancing drugs was brought up. Made me wonder what everyone uses. I dont use anything. Swore to myself I wanted to be natural. Only drug I use is mass quantities of alcohol ! Am I limiting myself by not using stuff like creatine or andro?

Creatine is a nutritional supplement. You may or may not see
improvements while using it. It worked like crazy for me the
first time I used it, but did nothing for me the second time a few
years later.

I can tell you one thing.I'm clean.I'm a little imbalanced as it is.I would hate to see how I would act if I started screwing with hormones.I know they work but,the long term effects aren't worth it.

Steak, Potatoes, Scottish Ale and Irish Stout are the drugs the body
needs! Oh and the occasional shot of 100% algava tequila to mix it up a
bit!

None of the scientific research I have read has separated the endurance effects of creatine from the endurance effects of increased intracellular volume + potassium + glucose, which accompany the prescribed method of creatine intake. That is, most forms of creatine encourage ingestion with grape juice (daily, for at least one week, then 1-4 times per week afterwards) which translates into a significant increase in one's intake in simple sugars. To my knowledge, no one has compared the performance-enhancing effects of this regimen with a comparable regimen including a non-creatine substitute. I believe that it is no coincidence that Paul Anderson drank a gallon of milk DURING his work-outs. This would provide enough simple carbohydrate to stimulate the release of insulin-like growth factors, and enough phosphorous to replace the presumed effect of creatine. Chocolate milk, with it's greater concentration of simple sugars, and xanthines (caffeine-like chemicals that facilitate the transport of glucose into cells) should be even more effective in allowing extended muscular exertion. Bottom line: I'm a fat old man with numbers that are inferior to most of you who contribute to this message board, but I have made more gains drinking 1/2 gallon of chocolate milk during my pathetic work-outs than I have with creatine, ephedrine, etc.

Well, creatine has several effects. First, for responders (and a
decent percentage of people simply don't respond to it), is the
increased muscular endurance. This lets you get a couple of extra
reps in your working sets, which has a phenomenal effect on your
strength gains. This has been proven in lots and lots of
studies: creatine is the most-studied nutritional supplement, so
this isn't related to the simple sugars some people take with their
creatine.
Another effect is that creatine is anti-catabolic: people with
muscle-wasting diseases (MS and ALS) use it to reduce the rate of
muscle loss. This could reduce the loss of protein that muscles
often suffer shortly after intense exercise. This, BTW, is why
it's a good idea to take a quick-absorption form of protein (usually
whey protein) immediately after a workout. Milk isn't good for
this, because casein clots in the stomach and is absorbed very slowly.
The volumization of muscles by creatine has two effects:
- It improves the leverage of many muscles, so it increases strength directly.
- This can also cause problems. The best documented problem
is anterior compartment syndrome, where the anterior tibialis muscle
swells so that it doesn't fit its fascia. This is very serious
and can cause the muscle to die if not treated. There is a
related potential I haven't seen studied in research, where shoulder
muscles swollen by creatine can suffer impingements. I've heard
of lots of instances of people suffering shoulder problems while using
creatine. If you're subject to RC impingements, I'd advise
caution if you try creatine.

So do you take the tater tots to the gym with you or is it strictly a post-workout supplement?

Tried creatine -- got the runs, that's about it. The loading phase is
brutal. Plus, creatine became a marketers dream -- open any muscle mag
and you will see. As soon as andro and ephidrine were off the market,
creatine became the next big thing. Frankly, it is not. Google
"creatine" and "study" or "science" and you will see that there is no
major study proving creatine does anything major for a lifter.
Lately, I have been using Tribulis. It is a root the bulgarians have
been using for years. Essentially, it is a testosterone topup. If you
have a wife or girlfriend, she will like the side effect -- you are as
randy as a polecat.
Also, I either drink two cups of coffee before a workout or lately I
have tried YJ Stinger mints. Each is a cup of coffee. I also pop an
aspirin as well -- good for heart and sort of a half stack, if you know
what I mean.
Get your vitamins too -- especially B complex. Other than that, guzzle, swill and consume protein.
I think the question of this forum is: Are the Highland Games becoming
overrun with steroid users? That, is the real question. As an amateur
who is pushing 40, I have no aspirations of becoming the next world
champion, I just don't want 18 year olds kicking my fat ass.

Oh lets not dive back into the steriod debate again! There was a quite
heated thread sometime last year (or the year before) that had a lot of
accusations, finger pointing, etc.
Nobody is going to come to this message board and admit to anything other than scotch, french fries, and/or stuff we buy at GNC.
Lets just say some guys out there are roid users (not me baby!), most
guys are not....and the users are typically NOT the best throwers. At
least from what I have seen.
For the record, I use MSM and Glucosamine to help with the aching knees
and shoulders. Not sure it does much, but I take it anyway. Protein
powers, because it is cheaper than buying chicken and steak for 4 meals
a day. Advil after the competition so my wife doesn't have to hear me
p!ss and moan all the way home.
....and beer, french fries, etc.

If you guys want to do the steriod debate again...that is cool too. I
can avert my attention away from the thread. To quote Jon Voight's
character in "Heat"...
"It's a free country brother."
Anyway...something that some of you may find helpful. After years of
choking down milk based protien drinks (choclate, vaninna, etc.) with
the consistancy of exterior latex paint, I finally found a decent fruit
flavored protien drink that I like. It is a lot more like drinking
cool-aid.
Usually ends up being about $1 per serving, or even a little less.
Low in cholesterol and fat (as my cholesterol levels are usually
suspect), about 90 calories, and 23g of whey isolate protien per
serving. It is the "Nectar" series of drink powers by Syntrax.
Most of them taste pretty good, and only the blue one REALLY stains
stuff when you spill it. 
...and no I don't work for the company. (Nor am I sponsored by them...or anyone else for that matter. *sniff*)

I wasnt looking for a steriod debate. Just wanted to know the pros and
cons of sup use and what people use. Good will always triumph over evil
in the end anyway.

I concur. I wasn't necessarily looking for a steroid discussion. Perhaps it was more a rhetorical question.
That aside, does anyone else use Tribulus and have you found it effective.

I have researched most brands in Canada. PVL has the best price for
quantity. I can get 90 1500mg tabs for 19.99 (Gold Member price at GNC
and discount price at Extreme Fitness Nutrition House). Regular GNC
price is 24.99. Best deal so far.
Is Andro available anywhere at all any more? I have heard about its
success. I know it was banned in the US. What about in the Great White
North? Or, via the Net?

Tribulus is actually the main ingredient in most of these "Natural Male Enhancers" they advertise during football games. Enzyte etc. so whether it increases testosterone production in humans or not it does (as someone else said) have side effects that keep the misses happy.
